Smelling bad?
 
Macy will be 2 in August, I just wondered if anyone else's Yorkie smells bad after going outside? She doesn't smell like urine, just really bad. I have another dog, and he never smells bad, so its not something from outside. I've done some research on this and I read something with the oils in their hair mixed with humidity makes them smell bad? I don't know if that's true or not, but is there anything I can do to help with the smell. I don't want to spray a dog perfume on her every time we come back in. I try to only give her a bath ever two weeks, I have tried doing it more often, but that didn't help either. The smell goes away after a while when she comes back in.

Do any of you live in humid areas have this problem as well? Could it be the texture of her coat? Any idea?

Sometimes, they like rubing on something dead, or discomposing, like snake skin, road kill, rotten fruit, and things, like that, it doesn't have to be something visible. Sometimes just an area were something disgusting was in the past, they just like to rubb themselves, in that area. I don't know why. But , I have noticed, that, specially, when we are in the country. I don't know if all dogs do that, but I have seen that happened, many times. My husband said this is normal.

I'm glad Lexi isn't the only one. I hate to take her out right after a bath because the sweet smell will be gone instantly. This particular smell isn't from rolling in nasty stuff because I watch her the whole time. What IS that??? :confused:

Now that Rolling in Something smell is an altogether different story. That has initiated an immediate bath more than once!

At first that is what I thought it was, but it is every time we go outside, she doesn't smell that way outside, just once we get back in. And it isn't only at my house, its at my mom's house, when she goes out, and my mother-in-laws's house. Which really makes me believe it has something to do with her coat and oils and stuff.

Does the smell go away after about 20-25 minutes? Macy's usually does, either it goes away or I get used to it, and don't notice it.

Yes mine do. It is the "terrier smell" that comes out in the yorkie. In a few minutes it goes away. That long hair traps smells.

Well, I don't really smell it after being back inside for a little while. But, by then, I'm so paranoid I think I just got used to it and can't smell it anymore. So, I really don't know, LOL.
And, like you, it's only when we come back in. I don't smell it when we're outside. If we don't go outside she either smells like her conditioner or she has no smell at all.

Dogs release a smell when they go outside to let other dogs in the area know they are near. The smell should go away after being back inside for 30 minutes.

That makes sense, but why is it only my yorkie smell and not my other dog.

Some dogs do it and some don't I am guessing

After I give Peanut a bath, I swear like 2 days later he smells. He loves to go outside in his dog run and lay in the sun. When he comes in I swear he smells like a cat pissed on him! I don’t get it. That’s where my doggy spray comes into play, just a quick spray and he smells like a freshly bathed boy!

Hee! What doggie spray do you use? I need some since mine goes out soon as she's bathed and rolls in the smelliest spots she can find! :thumbup::eek:

I just use the Petco spray.. I think it is called Powder or something. :confused:

my yorkie sweats too--but I noticed this odor and chalked it up to age--she is 12--they make some great long lasting dog sprays for odor--but it could be their teeth and/or ears too

Thanks for all the responses, I have a vet appointment this week. I think it may be a yeast infection. She has these little brown spots on her stomach, and its getting worse, and I think its starting to itch. So, I may need some more advice on dealing with a yeast infection.
