My Yorkie is itchy.... I have had Parker for a little over a month now! He is the greatest. My aunt and I both bought a yorkie. Brother and Sister actually. We love them! I do have a question though.... Parker is having a problem with dry skin. Our groomer said not to give him a bath except when we bring him to be groomed(every 4-6weeks at her suggestion). He was groomed on the 15, and the itching seems to get worse the longer he goes without a bath. Also, is there any suggestion on a shampoo and conditioner? His skin is very flaky, and he scratches himself all the time. I bought a puppy shampoo, and was using it about once a week or so, and it helped... some. Any suggestions? |
Is all of the shampoo getting rinsed out? If so, try an oatmeal shampoo, that might help. |
I have read that itchy skin can be an allergy to their food too! Have you tried switching brands? Something without corn is what I read to feed them. I hope your baby starts feeling better soon! |
Welcome to YT! Sorry to hear about your itching. It could be the food he's on. Also make sure he's rinsed out really good. I think brianjoy81 is right, oatmeal shampoo might help. We like C&C products, for Princess. I would check with your Vet if he's still itching. Again Welcome to YT |
Try 1/2 tbsp of Flaxseed Oil in his food. (You will have to get it from a healthfood store.) It helps with dry skin and has lots of other beneficial effects too. (Coat, eyes, etc.) |
my yorkie had that problem too and we took her to the vet and they were checking for mites, which she didnt have. in the end we found out that she was allergic to chicken. now she is on a lamb and rice diet and doing great! |
I have him on Eukanuba small breed. Also, I make sure I rinse him really well.... Should I ignore my groomer and give him a bath every week? He seems to do better when I do! |
I had that same problem with Raven awhile back. The vet also checked her for mites, which was negative. He had me give her childrens chewable benadryl tablets. I had to quarter the tablets because of her weight. He also had me change her food. I only gave her the tablets for about a week, since it seemed to go away after I switched her food. Kim |
With Finnigen we figured out it was a allergy to corn in his food. He's now on food without corn and does just fine. Shar-Lee & Finnigen |
My Yorkie had bad allergy no matter what shampoo or food I tried. Put her on a raw diet and her itchys disapeared. |
Hello there my little guy has the itches as well, but it is not consistant, I use grizzly salmon oil in his food and it is really good stuff, for the hair and alot of other stuff. It has the omega fatty acids in it.I dont bathe him very often every 6-8wks and they use hypoallergenic oatmeal on him. |
I posted a similar thread a while back and got so much advice, I decided to just let him itch! Here it is: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25083 |
LOL alaskadad - We do offer all different advise don't we ? Ok...here is my version of stopping the itchies - :) Chanel plays in the water ALOT. She got itchy last year - I got some Vetrenarians Best Spray on Moisture Mist SKIN Conditioner and used it after she had a bath - within 12 hours - she stopped scratching and never had another itch since - well...maybe a few but if I see her itching - I spray a little on her skin and leave it on and Voila - no scratching - I had great luck with this stuff and petco sells it for about 8 bucks a bottle |
