Dog licking her feet Priscilla licks and bites her feet a lot. I constantly have to make her stop. I have been feeding her Beneful for a while now, and recently switched due to being told that its not the best food for dogs. Could her old food be what was causing this? For two days now I've been giving her Freshpet that comes in the rolls made with real meat instead of by products. Is freshpet a good quality dog food? I recently cut off alot of her hair. I'm going to start growing her hair out to ateast 4 inches and want to get her on a good food. |
Does she go outside a lot or some? Environmental allergies and food allergies can cause it. Callie has environmental allergies and does it a bit but I tell her no and she stops I also use sensitive baby wipes every night to clean her feet so if she has pollen or anything on her feet it will come off and she wont drag it in her crate and sleep in it. Anxiety can also cause it. If it was the food then it could take a few weeks to get out of her system. Beniful is pretty bad there where some deaths and illnesses in dogs linked to it so its great you switched. I have heard nothing but great things about fresh pet and if Callie would eat it she would be getting some of it but shes picky lol. |
I would put her on a grain free kibble. Paw licking and chewing is usually the sign of allergies. |
I'll definitely try that!!! There is a lot of pollen where I live so that might be the problem! Is it normal for dogs to lick on their paws? I kind of think I am over reacting a little bit. She doesn't do it chronically just every once in a while. |
Mine lick his paws a lot too. Initially I thought he injured himself but that was not the case. Guess now I know why... :) |
I take my guys Hunting nearly daily, and they step in no telling what frequently. When I see one/any of them paying attention to a paw or two, I just scoop them up, turn on the Faucet (warm), and give their paws a good rinse. That takes care of most of it. I also keep the Hair right along/above their Paws clipped rather short, letting the "upper" Hair grow down over it. |
Brandi licks her paws a lot too but its usually before she is ready to take a nap. Notice the times at which your little one is licking her paws. Is it right before she goes to sleep? If so it could also be a comfort thing. |
My sister-in-law's Maltipoo Tanker has been licking his little paws and chewing on them. He chewed one of them till it was bleeding. I keep telling her that she should consider switching him off kibbles n bits to something better and maybe grain free but so far no luck. Poor little Tanker just runs around licking, chewing, sneezing and scratching all day everyday. I feel so terrible for him. I guess when I go over to see her I should start washing Tanker's paws and such and see if that helps- I hate to see him so miserable. |
I personally wouldn't feed Natures Fresh- it contains Carrageenan. Please read link below. It also has Peas and flax seed. Which I have noticed some pets get itchy while eating. Take Peanut for example. He cannot have flax seed, peas, grain.. and the list goes on. I would find a grain free food. Try to stay away flax seed if you can. In the mean time if she is really going at her feet you can take her into the Vet. He can give you some medicine that will help her. What dog food is the best to feed? I constantly hear about what ingredients you shouldn't fee, but rarely hear about what food is best to feed :P can anyone recommend a brand to me? |
The best dog food is going to be what she does best on. I use Canine Caviar. Peanut was licking his feet, biting, missing hair on leg from biting so much, he had hot spots, itching all the time, watery eyes, had to give him medicine every day. I started him on Canine Caviar and everything stopped. Normally at this time he would be a mess- He is doing great! No itches, eyes are clear, skin is normal.. it really is amazing. I would honestly stay away from grains, try to stay away from flax seed.. try to look around get some samples and see what she likes. http://www.peteducation.com/article....2+2111&aid=143 Has some really good info. I would recommend Canine Caviar to you- I know all dogs are different and will react differently, but for the ones I know switched are doing really well on it. |
