Why won't Scarlett walk? Any tips for getting Scarlett to walk? She plops her butt down or lies down when it is walk time. I drop the leash and have to hide behind a car before she will follow me. She does better away from sight of the house, but she will still plop down now and then. When we did leash walking at puppy school, she aced it. She is better when we are not in the neighborhood, but when we our in our neighborhood it is a struggle. Scarlett is 3 1/2 weeks old; she is a Yorkiepoo. |
Max was reluctant to walk at first. Keep your feet pointing forward. Say, "Let's go!" in a positive voice and try to take a step. If she doesn't move, wait quietly with your feet still pointing forward. Do not turn to her. Wait a minute before trying again. Be happy and confident, and never show frustration or anxiety. You may also want to try treats or toys to lure her into moving forward. If you have another human to help, have that person lead the way with the treat or toy lures. Once you can get her moving, establish a walking route. Max liked doing a big loop around our neighborhood. I could tell he felt a sense of accomplishment completing the loop. Then you can add additional walks to your regular route. |
3.5 weeks?! You must mean 3.5 months? |

If that's her little one in the avatar, then I think she means 3.5 months |

It is a typo!! 3.5 months! |
lol - now that we've established, Scarlett is 3.5 months old, try what Kristin suggested. I am nobody to give advice though. I've never had one harder to work with on a leash than my Mandie. She does sooo much better when her daddy is at the other end of the leash than me. I guess that means she doesn't think I "mean it" lol |
When Henri is being stubborn, I just give the lease a light tug (hard enough so he feels it but not drag/hurt him) and say in a happy sing-song voice "Come on! Let's go!". If that doesn't work, I just start walking ahead and say "Ok, I'm leaving you here then" in a serious voice and that will usually get him going. I don't know if this will be any use to you, good luck!:) |
I've heard of this before. I've seen it happen sometimes the owner is dragging the poor dog. I'd try using a treat. Every few steps give him a treat and praise him. He might be smelling other dogs, and I will always remember the fact that dogs can smell the pee from other dogs, and know pretty much all about them. He might be scared of leaving his territory, I dunno. Food always wins though. |
Buster can be reluctant sometimes I just pick him up and carry him a block or two and then I put him down. The new smells interest him and he starts picking up speed. |
dog My Spud will walk up the street but sits down when we turn for home. JoJo walks home but will not walk up the street. Yorkies have a mind of their own. I would not pull them or yank on their leash . I just carry one up and the other one down. They can be stubborn little furbutts at times. |
I should add that each new surface -- concrete, brick, grass, and so on -- was a new learning experience. Max was reluctant to walk on each surface until he was sure. :p |
