New Yorkie owner Hi everyone, I am new to these type of things, so I hope I'm doing it right. I recently bought a Yorkie at the end of May of which I was told was around 7 months old. She took a bit to house break, and we still have an accident every now and then. Of recently she has been going what seems to be very long time between going pee. I check the apartment and sometimes find a wet spot, others I don't. When I don't I can't seem to understand how she goes 12 hours without peeing. I take her out regularly and all she does is sniff around and do nothing. I'm pretty sure I'm missing where shes going. I'm not sure if this is normal after a change in home and owners. Also, she just went into her first heat, can that cause a change in her personality? any advice on having a young yorkie is great! Thanks! :dogprints |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! I don't have an answer for you, but I wanted to say welcome and congrats on your new furbaby:) Good luck and I hope you find the answers to your problem! |
Welcome to YT. I didn't notice a change in my girl's behavior with her 1st heat. Maybe a bit more lovie, for a day or too. Nothing else changed though. Glad you found us. If you have any other questions, ask! This site is full of information and the people are a wealth of knowledge! (nice too!) |
I'd be willing to bet she has a secret hiding place for peeing. Get a black light that will find all of the places she has been peeing. You would be surprise at how many different places she is peeing. Unless something is physically wrong it's highly unlikely she is holding it for 12 hours. |
Thanks! Unfortunately that's what I had been thinking and was afraid of. But otherwise she was just at the Vet today and he seems to think a bit of separation anxiety because that is normally when we find the spots. I'd cage her when we leave but she makes a much larger mess in her crate when we leave than when she is out of it. Same with overnight, she does better out of the crate sleeping with us than in it. Day by day she does improve though. |
Yeah I'd check for secret spots. Under beds, etc. |
I would use a play pen for a few days so if she goes potty you will see it. |
Welcome... |
Hi & welcome to YT, I don't have answers either. All I know is that my 3 yo that I adopted this year in March NEVER asks to go out to pee but also has never had an accident inside the house. I take him out every few hours anyway & he always pees, so I'm hoping that he will one day start letting me know when he wants to go out. I told my vet about it & he told me to not worry about it. I still do though---LOL. Also, when we take our morning walks, he pees about 100 times---on EVERY brick mailbox column in the neighborhood. |
I try to take her out at least every 4 hours, and sometimes she doesn't do anything. I have picked up on that she paces when she wants out, but even then she doesn't always go. She is hard to read. But now I have a new problem, she has found the cats liter box and is eating the cat poo. I know its not good for her but I have no other place for the litter box, I live in a one level apartment. Any help on this one?? |
One of my little angels at the rainbow Bridge ate her poop as a puppy. It was long before I found YT. A lt of people have found success feeding their dogs pineapple. This thread may be helpful. I hope Max' mom doesn't mind it coming up again. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-his-poop.html |
I am with the others in thinking your girl had a secret hiding place to pee that you haven't found. Izzy had been eating the treats from the cat boxes and Jack's also - sometimes even her own...I know gross, right? What we did with the cat boxes was get a gate and gated off the area where the cats go. Maybe, since you have a one level floor plan you could buy one of those play yards and put around the area so the cats have room to jump in but not let your pup in. I also bought NaturVet Coprophagia Deterrent from either Petsmart or PetCo for Izzy - I believe they make the same thing for cats. If your pup is eating her own then I would try the pineapple first and always be diligent in picking up any poop. Good luck! |
