My yorkie he is 15wks old his weight is 1 pound 15 oz.. he was playing and all of a sudden started throwing up and shaking really bad, couldn't walk was really disoriented .. I ran and put water on my finger and dipped it into the sugar.. he started to come around.. but he will not eat now.. I am forcing him food, prying his little mouth open once in his mouth he will lick and swallow it.. now he is just laying there, how long before he is fully recovered should I keep forcing the food in him... He finally went to the food himself.. should I watch him around the clock tonight or will he be ok on his own? He sleeps right next to my bed.. Thank you.:confused:

Just seeing this. I hope he is better this morning. I would have suggested taking him into the ER vet last night and definitely watching him closely all night. If is isn't a lot better this morning, I would go ahead and take him in. It does sound like a hypoglycemic episode and at that age, he is definitely prone to them, but it might have been low enough to cause a seizure, as described by his behavior. He needs to be eating frequent small meals every few hours to keep his glucose levels steady. Please post an update and I'm sorry no one saw this last night when you were asking for advice. :(

Sounds like hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) to me. If in doubt, take him to the vet. The episodes will come on after a period of activity, so if he has been eating and sleeping, you shouldn't need to watch him around the clock at night. Hypoglycemia is common in smaller Yorkies, and if you catch it early, before they go unconscious, the sugar treatment will help them recover. Personally, I use Karo syrup, but Nutrical is another high energy supplement you can purchase to treat it. Just be sure to encourage your dog to eat regular food and drink once it recovers--just like you did. But if they pass out, that is an emergency situation and they have to go to the vet immediately. Call the vet anyway and tell them what happened, just to be safe, and to confirm the best treatment for your dog.

I agree, for his size and weight you should always keep some Kayro syrup or puppy Nutri cal on hand. You never know when you may need a pick me up as you sadly found out the hard way.

Never over stimulate him, be sure he is getting lots and lots of rest throughout the day and several small meals to help keep his sugar levels up.

If it was hypoglycemia he should have been back to his normal self after he got sugar and food in him sense he wasn't you need to get him to the vet asap!

Hypoglycemia can be deadly to the tiny Yorkies. You should ALWAYS have nutri-cal or karo syrup on hand. Once a puppy goes down it can sometimes be very hard to get them back even with emergency care, not to mention the cost of a vet. bill. I even send it home with any puppy that I sell. It's just that important.

I hope he's better :( I've been better so far. Only one hypoglycaemic episode with my Bug. Last week she forgot to eat for a few hours (she loves to cuddle to her detriment apparently) and I noticed she was shaking, so I got her eating soe wet food right away and she was instantly better. She's now 7 months and I'm glad this didn't happen when she was *super* tiny. I would have been terrified.
