on the milk thread there were questions about ear mites..so I thought I would post this for all who doesnt know this tip....

removing ear mites

Most any oil will smother, drown ear mites....

olive oil, veggy oil, wesson oil or mix a vitamin E capsule and anyone of the above oils; using an eye dropper put two or three drops of into the ear, begin massaging the ear till you hear a fluid sound (about a minute will do it), let the dog shake his head finish by cleaning off the excess oil with a qtip or cotton ball...do this every other day for three days...that should get rid of those little buggers without the paying the vet!

How do you know if your dog has mites? Just curious.

If he/she shakes their head a lot and or scratch their ears excessive... usually means ear mites...

I take my puppy to the groomer do you think they could notice when they clean my puppys ears if he has ear mites? How do they get them? Just wondering in case one day my puppy gets them.

Ear mites live in the ears and on the skin of pets infected with them. The
mite lives its entire life on the pet and it takes about 3 weeks for a mite
egg to develop into an adult mite. The adult mites are very mobile and can
live for some time off of a dog or cat, which enables it to be fairly
contagious.

The most common sign of ear mite infection is shaking of the head and ears.
Dogs may also scratch at their ears, rub their face and in severe cases may
even cause bleeding sores behind their ears in their effort to relieve the
discomfort from the mites. The intense itching associated with these mites
is thought to be due to a hypersensitivity reaction, which is similar to an
allergy. Some pets can be infected without showing signs of itching or head
shaking, apparently because they don't develop the hypersensivity reaction.

Ear mites are more commonly diagnosed in cats than they are in dogs but they are a significant cause of ear infections in dogs, too. Dark brown to black debris accumulates in the ears of infected pets and the mites may be visible as small moving white specks on the debris.

Most flea and tick products will kill ear mites on the skin.

You can prevent earmites by using revolution.My yorkie had them once and the smell was awful,not to mention the irritation they caused her:(

My sister sent me a list of "Home Remedies" and this is what it says exactly about Ear Mites........"Eliminate Ear Mites" - Put a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil in your dog's/cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the dog's/cat's skin, smothers the mithes, and accelerates healing.

Revolution
 

I too use Revolution on both my boys, kills fleas, ticks, ear mites, sarcoptic mange mites, protects against heartworm and isactually cheaper than Advantage or Frontline. Swear by it.

Earmites can live in two places the dogs body skin and inside the ear.

Earmites that lodge within the ear can not be cured with revolution and advantage they will help with "skin earmites" as that is where the adults will lay their eggs and recycle the problem.

YOU MUST treat the inside of the ear as a seperate problem by either use the oils to drown them, buy ear mite over the counter med's or go to the vet.

Once the ears are clear the continued use of revolution or advantage should prevent the adults from hatching eliminating the cycle.

Daisy had ear mites when I first got her. She was itching and had a brown film in her ears. The vet took a sample of the brown film with a swab and let me look at it through a microscope and I saw the bugs. Yuck! He gave me some drops that I gave her twice a day for a week and they went away.
