Seperation Anxiety My yorkie is 12 years old and has developed serious separation anxiety. I keep receiving notes and messages from my neighbors that she is barking and scratching the door when I am away night or day. She didn't use to do this, but has started all of a sudden. I really don't know what to do to calm her down and I cannot keep receiving complaints from my neighbors. Does any one have any ideas? Your help is very much appreciated. |
Many areas are having thunder storms this time of year. Could that possibly have set off some anxiety? There is a product available called Rescue Remedy for pets. It is an all natural product that you can buy at a pet store or online. Giving it tends to calm fears and make the pet more laid back. It is not addictive in any way and may help keep your pet calm while you are gone since there is no one there to help her while you are gone. It can be given by dropper right into the mouth or it can be put in the water bowl. |
I would love some tips on this.. My 7 month old has the worst separation anxiety ever. :( |
12 years old... Is she in good health? I don't think I've ever heard dogs developing separation anxiety all of the sudden. Was there any change like moved to a new place? Or maybe there's neighbor that has a dog/cat and she senses them? If you could provide little more details, I think everyone here can give you better suggestions/advice. |
She is in good health, had bloodwork done a few months ago and everything came back normal. I have lived in the apartment i live now for over a year. My other dog passed away shortly after I moved, so this one, Calypso, started crying everytime I left her alone, but she got over it after a little bit. She just started crying and barking and scratching at my door just a few weeks ago. My vet suggested I use a DAP collar, but so far, doesn't seem like it has done much as I have received a complaint just last night from my neighbor. There is nothing that has changed in her environment so it is so bizarre that she started having anxiety all of a sudden. Any one have any similar experience? Any help is so appreciated. I just want to figure out how to help her. |
What about a thunder shirt, do you leave the tv on for her when you leave? If she is use to having another dog there with her and since the other dog passed the anxiety started. She is probably lonely. I would leave the tv on for her and I would try leaving her for short periods and get her use to being alone. It is very hard on them if they use to having another dog in the house and then having to be alone. |
I put a thundershirt on her yesterday especially for the fireworks, but that didn't seem to help too much as my neighbor complained to me today. I usually leave the tv or the radio on for her, but I try not to leave my house once I come home from work. I just want to figure out how to calm her anxiety |
I totally understand what your little girl's going through. Yazmin went through a terrible phase of separation anxiety several months ago when I returned to work. With several suggestions from YT members, below is a list of things that works great for my little girl. I copied and pasted it here from my past thread, hope this helps your girl. 1. I purchased her a cage and covered it with a blanket so she would feel more secure. She has her bed in the cage also. 2. I leave a plain tee shirt with my scent on it that I wore the night before. 3. I purchased the Comfort Zone Plug-In Diffuser 4. I leave CD's on continuios play of Harp Solo music and downloaded a CD called, Through A Dog's Ear:Calm your Canine Down Vol. 2. 5. I purchased a Thundershirt from one of our YT members, Kristin, (Maximo). 6. I start playing the CD's 1/2 hour before I leave and no longer go through a long "Good Bye" ritual with her, just a quick "Be a good girl". 7. I purchased an Interactive Treat Puzzle to greet her with when I come home. |
