My beast ATE through a wooden gate in a week! I don't know whats up with my little guy. He's almost 8 years old, he's 7.5lbs and he has severe separation anxiety. We had to limit the area in the house for my boys since they were pottying in the house again. So we gated them into the pantry room, which is large enough for them during the day or when we go out for a little while. They were gated with a wooden baby gate secured by 2 hooks on both sides of the door frame. In less than 1 week, my Dexter ate through the gate completely! He was out yesterday through the hole he made. Fletcher couldn't get out, nor does he really try. Dexter is a 7lb beast!!! LOL Poor little guy.. I feel sooo bad that he's suffering from so much anxiety. The pantry room is big enough, his bed is in there, his brother is in there, toys, water, food. I give him a treat everytime I put him in there to try to make it an enjoyable place for him. But he's just mental! :( |
((Hugs)) He is determined not to stay in there, isn't he?? Is there anything your vet can do for him? Maybe getting him something for anxiety will help him? With mine, if we put her harness dress on, she calms down. It's like a thunder shirt for her. Maybe one of those shirts would help. Have you sat in there and played with him? I'm sure you've tried all this stuff, I'd get something from the vet, tbh. I really feel for you though. You think you have them in a safe place when you go out, and you come back to find a Houdini that's escaped and is unsupervised, having fun all over the house! ((hugs)) |
Well I won't put a shirt, collar, harness anything on them when we are not there. I have a fear of them getting caught on something and choking to death. Yeah I have issues too LOL It breaks my heart that he is suffering and when I'm not there, he's suffering sooo badly he eats through a gate to get out. :( I leave a radio on for them during the day so they have noise. This helped in the past, but it does not seem to be helping now. |
Um, I'm pretty sure Dexter and Wylie are related!!!?? When Wylie was 10mths old (yes, only TEN mths), he ATE through a baby gate, like the ones w/ those white plastic wirings....just ate right on through it. Wylie is against barriers, clearly . We now use little barriers to fence off part of the house and luckily, Wylie has stopped eating barriers for years now. |
LOL!! Go Wylie! Dexter is just mental. I know both my boys have separation anxiety, but Dexter is just crazy! Luckily my boys are not climbers though. Why climb when you can eat through!? LOL It really just breaks my heart that he's suffering! |

lol @ why climb when you can eat on through. Poor guy just needs fiber! You're misunderstanding him! I wish I had suggestions, but mine isn't a wood chewer. Cords that charge the phone and Ipad she can't resist! |
I would try a thundershirt, but he's only gated when I'm not home and I won't leave him home alone with anything on, no collar, harness, clothes, etc... Hhhmm I'll look into melatonin though! Thanks!!! |
Jasmin has separation anxiety too. She almost chewed thru the iris playpen. We decided to invest in the x-large metal cage. She seems ok now. |
