Vacationing with Yorkies We used to travel quite a bit. Had a couple of older cats but our son(then single) would come stay at our place to take care of them. We recently adopted Coco(wasn't planning on another pet) but the owners were my parents and I just could not see Coco going to another home so we adopted her. Ok, obviously I am not going to board her and having our son come stay with her is not an option. How do you handle road trips with your pets? Do you leave them in the hotel room while your away??? I'm not too keen on this idea. Do you take them into the stores??? Not restaurants but little shops that you might stop in while on a road trip. Just not sure if the shops would allow this but if she were in say a pet stroller????? Just curious what you do with your babies while on vacation. Thank you |
I travel alone and with my husband.....when I have to go to a rest stop alone I put him in a carrier that looks like a purse with a zipper on top and vents on each side because I was caught one time bringing him in one and was told to leave! Now I just sneak him in ;) In hotel rooms, if I have to leave him I bring the crate in with me and leave him in there so nothing can happen while I'm gone, but usually just go places that allow pets like restaurants with outdoor seating. I also have an open top carrier so I can be hands free, sorta. I just make sure I always have his water bottle and most people are happy to see him! You'd be surprised what stores will allow pets if they are small and you are carrying them as long as they don't sell food. |
I would be careful leaving your dog alone in a hotel room they can get stolen or the maid can let them out. I think there was also a story of someones dogs barking to much so the hotel staff took the dogs out for a walk with out asking. When we go Callie is never left alone me and one of my parents stay at the hotel and the other will go get the food or whatever we need. |
Have you thought about a pet sitter? My friend is a pet sitter and she visits animals in their home minimally 2x a day - some request more frequent visits. During her visits, she feeds and waters them, takes them out for walks around the yard (or other designated places the owners may want), spends about 1/2 hour each time playing with them or petting/brushing them. If kitties are home, she scoops the litter and makes sure they are fed and watered. She also will bring in papers/mail, water plants and turn on and off lights to make it look like someone is still there. I would highly recommend a pet sitter (make sure they are bonded and have a contract). My friend has even taken pets that have gotten ill to the vets for treatment is needed. If you do take your pup with you and you stay in a hotel, definitely keep her crated while you are out just in case the maid opens the door, you don't want your little one running out. There have been a few stories where the dogs were not crated and the maid opened the door only to have the pup run out and get lost. Not something you want to have happen while on vacation away from home. |
I take my pups when I travel but only bring one at a time. I rotate who gets to go with Mom &;who stays home with my grown sons. I never leave them in my hotel room. I take them wherever I go. I was pleasantly surprised that they are almost always welcome in stores etc. Most clerks just tell me how cute they are!:) |
We travel with our dogs all the time. Instead of staying in hotels now we rent condos or houses. Surprisingly, the cost is about the same and if other family or friends go with you it can actually be less. What you give up in hotel services is nothing compared to the benefits of having your pet(s) with you.:) |
I usually take 1-2 with me. They go almost everywhere with me but if I have to leave them in a hotel I crate them. I use an oversized crate and put a small padlock on it. Maybe a little paranoid but there's to many stories of lost or stolen pets. Sure, they can cut the lock but this cuts down the tempation. |
I do leave Jackson in the hotel room very briefly - I don't like doing it, and I get very nervous for some reason, but I always gate off the front door JUST IN CASE God forbid the door was to get opened by a maid or something but I also call the front desk and tell them there is a dog, and no cleaning ppl. I also hang the do not disturb sign on the door and turn the TV up loud. Jax is always sleeping on the bed when we get back. I won't do it longer than 2 hours just when we go out to dinner. |
