What is the average cost of a puppy? & Too many dogs?
 

I've seen the cost vary tremendously on internet ads to a few breeders, but I would like to know, how much is the average cost of a yorkie from a reputable breeder? What are your thoughts on those that ship? Also how much breeding adults is too much? I was looking at a Maltese breeder and her puppies are gorgeous. Went to her main website and she had a lot of adults IMO. I'm not sure though what's considered too many. I guess I'm looking to purchase from a breeder that doesn't constantly have litters.

I think 1200 to 1500 would be the average cost from a reputable breeder. I would like to see the pparents and where raised so the only way i would bypass that is i was certain they were reputable and i really wanted a pup from that breeder. Most reputable breeders only breed a few litters a yr so they arent going to have a bunch of breeding pairs

AVOID THE words that label tiny pups- teapot, micros, mini- those words. Those breeders are breeding for the wrong reasons usually. Ask about the parents/ grandparents- health as far back as they (the breeder) can go. Ask about previous litters, how those puppies are doing. Health guarantee, find out what the breeder will do if your puppy becomes sick. That's a few that I can think of. I know there will be more. I don't know about shipping puppies. I- myself- don't like the thought of them being shipped. Have fun looking! Keep asking us stuff when you need to. :)

What will they do if the puppy gets sick? I'm assuming sick as in seething genetic? What is a normal health guarantee and do all reputable breeders offer them?

Sickness should be discussed in the health guarantee, what to do if the pup gets really sick- will the breeder help with the costs? Replace the pup? Read that section gemy suggested. It will answer your questions better than I can.

I'm not really sure how many is to many. For me I want a pup that has been raised in a home so I guess as many that fit in a house but them still being clean and well taken care of. I think price can be any where from $1,000 to $2,000. I don't like shipping unless it is an older dog not likely to get hypoglycemia or someone who is ridding with the pup in the cabin. One of the problems with buying from a breeder and having a pup shipped is you can't go to the there house and see where the pups are living and that there not living in filth, can't see the parents, and can't personally meet the breeder. So many puppy mills make these great looking websites and love shipping the pups to you because you have no idea the hell the parents are living in.

It depends on the part of the country you live in, and the supply and demand as well. The most important thing is that you check out your breeder thoroughly and purchase a healthy, well-bred dog. You could pay $750 for a quality dog, or you could pay $2,000 for a sickly, unhealthy dog. Be cautious, and take your time!

You are right there is no easy answer as how many are too many. For some people and situations 4 females are 2 too many. For others they could easily handle 6 or more.

Some of it depends upon whether or not you are a working dog breeder as well as a show breeder. To do both well, you need to compete in both venues, and obviously to train in both.

Both are very time consuming, not to mention the whelping time involved;)

Ideally you train every day, at the minimum three times per week, this is not counting the daily walks etc.

So with three working dogs, 30 minutes per day each of "training" 30 minutes of walking or like activity. Let me do the math here... 3 hrs per day for exercise. Then we have grooming. At least three times per week per each dog. And high grooming need dogs like Yorkies, like Brt's. we are looking at a minimum of one hour per dog by three times per wk. That seems like 9 hours or so. Of course that is not including full bath time. Oh the mind begins to boggle.

Then there are the show or competitive event trials. Three or four day weekends involved.

Needless to say our life revolves around our pups.

I got Galen from a reputable breeder that was far from my home. She sent me tons of pictures and a few videos of him playing with his siblings and mom. The tickets to fly to him was way too expensive for me. He was shipped to me by courier. Do not have a pup shipped in cargo. The courier was wonderful. I spoke to her. She made me feel so calm. He came to me happy and loving. If the breeder is reputable. You do not have to worry. Maybe link the site so we can check it out and see if any red flags. It is always nice to get a second opinion good luck

I didn't get a chance to email her about the basics (genetic testing, etc.) She charges a hefty price so I would hope that is included but would not be surprised if it isn't.

I'm about to send out emails to yorkie breeders from the referral site.

Did the woman who you got Galen from have young kids? She was super nice? Everytime I look at that pic of Galen it looks exactly like the pup we almost got but he was sold before we got a chance to get him. :2omg:
We ended up with an 11 month old from a show breeder right in our town. It still cost us 2,000 but she was well worth it...
