AKC Registering Puppy Question
 

I have a friend that has found a puppy for sale. The owner is not a breeder. The parents are both registered but the mother dog is 13 years old. She said that she could not register the puppies with AKC because the mother is older than 10 years old. Is this true?? What type of questions should she ask the seller since the dog isn't going to be registered? Thanks for your help.

I don't know about the registration side of it, but someone here will. Wow, 13 seems like a super risky age for a little Momma to be breeding. Was it an accident or ? That's a fragile age, for any dog. Kinda scary, don't you think :(? I'd be very nervous about buying from this person, to be honest. I'd want to know why this senior dog was bred. Is your friend's heart totally set on this puppy?

There is a maximum age for AKC Registration. I know the minimum age is 7
mos at breeding (which is ridiculous) and I believe the maximum age is 7yrs but check the AKC Website where it is listed. I could be wrong on the max age.

Thank you everyone for responding. Yes, it was an accident as the owner said the boy is 15 1/2 and the vet told her his sperm count was extremely low. My friend's heart isn't set on this particular dog as she hasn't been to see it yet. The seller is only asking $300 for the dog and it isn't that important to my friend that it is registered ... as it will be in a loving home with another pet.

Ohhh why aren't these sweet seniors spayed & neutered.:( Even tho the pup may be cute & is only $300, I really have to wonder if they are healthy at all? If the owners don't properly take care of the elderly pups, I highly doubt there were any tests done, you never know what they passed onto the pups, genetically. I worry so much for the older mom pup, pyometra can be life threatening...

Personally, I wouldn't hand over a dollar to anyone that puts their senior dogs in this position.

You can call the AKC personally to ask this info. I tried to do a search on their website www.akc.org. But did not find the answer to the question you asked.

Call their REgistration department and they will help you.

Trust me that is not at ALL advised to have a bitch whelp at 13yrs old and with a sire that is how old?

If it was an accident I am guessing she didn't do health testing or know the lines of her dogs to know if there genes have genetic illnesses in them so this pup could end up with a serious genetic illness later in life. Also any one who has a female whelp is a breeder.

The maximum age for breeding a female and registering the litter with AKC is 12 years old. Considering a responsible, ethical breeder, especially a show breeder, takes excellent care of these atheletes, which your breeding dogs really are, and knowing that Yorkies can easily live to 14-17 years old, a healthy, well kept, well cared for 12 year old female can easily whelp a healthy litter. THAT being said, unless this is a show breeder, or a breeder that has provided the necessary care/diet/etc for this female, I would be very cautious. BYB will breed anything that can be bred, for as long as they can stand upright, with no thought of health checks or required nutrition for breeding dogs. Responsible breeders know full well how long they can breed their ladies and register their litters, and a responsible breeder would not have bred a female whose litter could not be registered, nor would a responsible breeder have allowed two intact breeders to "accidentally" get in that situation. Legit breeders are well aware of the research that has been done in the area of breeding and they know the health issues and concerns that arise when an intact female is allowed to come into heat and remain unbred, so as soon as we retire a breeding female, we spay her to prevent the ravages of hormones on the females. ....I would be most leery of this pup and the circumstances around its conception. I have a real issue with dogs this age not having been spayed and neutered....it seems to me they are just pimping their sweet lady until she can absolutely no longer survive and reproduce for them.

Sweetie there are so many questions. WEre the dogs health tested before they mated? If so for what breed specific testing was done?

Has the pup been BATS tested yet? What is the evaluation of their knees?

Quite frankly I am gobsmacked with a litter out of a 13yr old female.

I guess if their friend wants that puppy, just kind of be prepared for any and all health issues that "could" arise. What is the likelihood? Probably better than 50/50.

It is a crap shoot, for crying out loud there is no breeding of a gal 13 yrs old done repetitively done by any respectable breeder.
