:eek::eek: In the last week, I've heard hawks around my yard. It's a mom and a baby causing all kinds of havoc in the trees. I'm sure the mom is teaching her baby to hunt. The problem is that I think they may have moved into a tree just outside my fence:eek:. They've been spotted there a few times within the last 48 hrs.

My question is, can I do anything to get them to move? LOL! I'm thinking there isn't but I thought I'd ask.:rolleyes: Cinders doesn't ever go out alone, but the neighbors have dogs and cats that roam freely between yards. I have a broom ready incase the hawks try to get a neighbor's pets. I'll try to get pictures of defending the pets if it happens and if I can. :D

Available food sources are part of what attracts hawks. Critters like rabbits, rodents, and pigeons are popular foods for them (depending on what kind of hawk you have.) If there are small animals like that in your neighborhood then hawks will hang around. Clearing out areas that rodents live in may help if your neighbors will pitch in.

If you have open fields in the area they may be feeding on field mice. They may move on if they don't find a good supply of food.

ive read if you put reflecter strips in the tree ir can deter them. I would not like to see a hawk I saw a falcon up close just sitting on the sidewalk yesterday and that was enough for me. He wasnt phased by peopls walking by at all

You can try to deter them - it probably won't work. I've heard that making loud noises may cause them to want to relocate. (Horn/firecrackers/etc). I've dealt with the hawks and owls for a year now and they really seem to be used to noises (like having to live in cities has desensitized them or something). I just stay alert and I even take out a pop open umbrella with me sometimes.

I have some of that reflector tape all over my yard. Now, it actually may help with the hawks...they don't seem to come as low as they used to. But the owls - they don't care about that tape at all lol

OK, Good ideas. I'm going to tell my neighbor about the umbrella.

I don't think we can hang reflectors in that tree- it's a really tall poplar - 40 to 50 feet high? Maybe the smaller trees around that 1 will help.

Yea, there's a ton of rabbits and squirrels around this year. I do hope they get the moles though, that would be helpful! ;)

Same thing here, it's been building a nest in a tree in my neighbors front yard. :eek:

I don't worry too much about my guys, since they are pretty big (8-13 lbs) but my neighbor has a quite small Yorkie Female, that I worry about more than they do.

What really ticks me off is...
They leave her tied on a leash and alone in their front yard for hours. Their back yard is like a sieve. I'm just amazed they still have her. :confused:

I'm amazed too that they still have her if that tree is in the little yorkies yard! I'd talk to them if you have a chance to. Maybe if they know there's a hawk nesting they'll be more attentive to their little one and not leave her out alone.

My neighbor is elderly, and very talkative about her pets and mine. She'll love the umbrella idea.

Our neighbor's 9+ pound Yorkie was attacked by a hawk and was lucky to survive. Hawks and owls are abundant here. We have both living in our backyard. I had Teddy on a leash in our front yard a few weeks ago when a small chicken hawk swooped right over my head on his way to nail a squirrel. He flew off with the squirrel screaming all the way. :eek:

I had a terrifying experience with my first yorkie, Max. He was only 3.5 lbs and I never even considered a bird attacking him. One day it was drizzling and I let him out in the back yard. I was standing under the deck. He just walked out, did his business, and ran back to me. As soon as he turned and started running to me a big hawk swooped down on him missing him by maybe a foot or two. Thank God he ran back to me when he did. I had nightmares for a long time about it. After that he never went out without me right by him.
I can't remember now exactly who I called about the hawk but I was told that a lot of people in our neighborhood had reported missing kittens. They told me that even if the dog were a little too big for the hawk to fly off with it could still do a lot of damage to the dog when it flew down on the dog (including breaking their back).

LOL! I wish! I'm sure we're not allowed to shoot them, but don't think I haven't thought about it!;)

They are a protected specie you can go to jail for shooting them

Yeah, that's why I just want them to go away. I've seen stories of dachshunds being carried away by them, and dropped! (the dachsie was ok, but still...) So far most of the ideas I've seen here we're going to try. Cinders is in the house till 7/2 when she get's her staples removed from her spay. I worry about the neighbors animals more. They like to go visiting the neighborhood.

I'm glad nothing happened to your little guy. You were very lucky!!

ive heard those owl statues deter them you would have tovkeep moving it atound. We have a blue herron statue in our back yard that we have to do tha5t to to keep blue heron out of our yard so they dont eat the koi

Good idea, I haven't seen the real owl this year, maybe that's why the hawks are moving in. Thanks! Now to look at Lowes...:thumbup:
