Is it normail to stay overnight when getting neutered? Hello, I am new to yorkie talk. I have a pup who is now 5 1/2 months old and the vet said he is safe to get neutered now. They are only charging 45$ so I was surprised when they said he has to stay overnight. I have never had a dog who didn't come home the day of surgery. Is this normal? I'm not feeling comfortable with leaving him there overnight because he may not be watched.... I'm starting to think maybe they are using a lower grade medicine which really knocks them out since it is so cheap! What do you think? Time to switch vets? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. A lot of vets want dogs to stay overnight after neutering/spaying. I wouldn't do it if there is not 24 hour staff. You can talk to your vet's office and insist on taking your pup home. If they refuse, then I would seek another vet's office. Our former vet who performed Max's surgery said I had to leave him overnight. When I dropped him off, I threatened to bang on the windows all night until they gave me my dog. Turned out that Max barked his way out. The office called me at 4 pm and told me to come get my pup. :D |

Tibbe stayed overnight with a vet tech there and me oh the phone often checking on him through the night. |
My vet said the same thing when Teeka were fixed. I questioned them as to their being someone in attendance and they said... No.....so I said....why would I leave her here if no one is going to watch her when she can come home & have me right there! They did not suggest it again and she was ready to go home by 4:30. Talk to your vet! |
If no one is going to be there with them over night I absolutely would not leave him I also would wait closer to 7 or 8 months to get him neutered. Make sure you get pre surgery blood work. |
I would be concerned that the neuter only cost $45, that seems so little. Do they do blood work with so young baby before surgery? I just don't know and am curious. Perhaps they will not do the surgery until late in the afternoon and need to monitor him overnight. I agree with others that he would be better at home than alone at the vet. Did they explain the surgery protocol so you know what they do? I don't know what they could do for so little. I am just asking as I really do not know what the going rate is, but when a dental costs over $500 I wonder. |

it is a regular vet... tomorrow i am going to call. maybe switch vets. |
Yes I have to agree. $45 is way too inexpensive for neutering. Even in the low cost neitering center near our home the price is $125 for neutering and $250 for spaying but they don't do screening so we switched to our regular vet who is much more expensive but they do screening. I wouldn't take a chance with my dogs. Also they never once suggested leaving them there over night. |
morgan had to stay overnight but they have a vet tech stay there with the ones who have had surgery or are sick |
I bet the neuter cost $45, but then they will add anesthesia ($100), meds and other things. To total about $200, also I would wait to make sure his teeth are out. I didn't kne had my boy neutered and then later had to have puppy teeth removed. |
IMHO $45 for a regular vet neuter is toooooooo low!! No way the dog can be pre screened, given the proper anesthetic protocol or after care meds for that price. I would pay more than that for a regular visit. I would also doubt that they would employ a tech overnight for post op care. I am really stressed when my dog has surgery of any kind, but would be really scared if it cost so little...Some corners must be cut to do this. Sorry to be so negative, but anesthetics for small dogs needs care and competence. |
I don't think I've ever heard anyone paying that little for neutering... And like everyone said, what's the point of leaving the pup there if no one is going to watch him?! Only times I've left the pups overnights was when I knew they'd be safer at the vet watching over them 24/7 and having the meds necessary to treat them asap when needed. If you're already uncomfortable with the vet, I'd say it's best to change now and find someone else. |
I neutered my young boy at 6.5 months. Not one of my boys has ever been overweight from neutering, or overweight period. Dogs get fat from being overfed, not from being castrated. I hope that $45 is part of a spay/neuter certificate or clinic. I paid a couple hundred bucks for a neuter here. I would make sure that the dog has pre-anesthesia blood work. |
I switched vets and little Marco is getting neutered this Wednesday. Teeth will likely need to be removed too... He has a pretty pronounced underbite. This vet made me feel much more comfortable and is sending him home with me at 5pm with pain meds. They estimated a cost of $200 and have to do an exam on him first since have never seen him. It's a highly recommended vet in town. |

Glad to hear you made the switch and that your little one will be able to come home after the procedure. My vet let Jack come home after his neutering but kept Izzy overnight for her spay (which are two completely different surgeries - neutering is much less invasive than spaying). I will keep Marco in my prayers on Wednesday and please be sure to post and update for us. Oh and welcome to YT! |

Thank you. I feel a little weird on YT since Marco doesn't look like a yorkie, as he is a mix. But oh well! I love him the same amount |
I'm really happy to hear you changed vets. I thought you should - as soon as you asked if you should - because just asking that told me you didn't trust him. :) Honestly, I can't understand ever having to have your dog stay overnight for a spay or a neuter *unless* your dog has some other medical problems. I have 3 Yorkies and each one was spay/neutered in the morning and sent home by 4pm. I would never let one of mine stay *unless* there was an emergency and there was going to be someone there *at all times* which normally is not the case. Most vets will want you to go to an emergency animal hospital because they have staff already scheduled. Yes, definately make sure your pup's teeth are all out - otherwise you might have to take him back in... you don't want to have to put him under twice. I think most of mine were around 7 months old. Great job trusting your instincts! |
I made an appointment and had Becca at the Vet's when they opened at 7am. It was just like it didn't happen when I picked her up at 5pm. Scar's gone now, and you can't see any evidence she was Spayed. |
