not eating!! please help! Hello, my name is Andrew an I have a toy yorkie that is 15 weeks old and he won't eat his food unless I feed it to him him one at a time with my hand. He was eating iams smart puppy until he was 13 weeks and I switched him too kibbled and bits an he ate it for awhile now he won't eat it, I'm not sure if it's the food or what. Please help I can't always feed him by hand and I don't want him to starve to death. :( |
Your baby is a baby and is still adjusting to being in a new place. Is there a reason that you changed foods? There are many really good foods out there for puppys, quality is very important, but particularly during the growing time. As for feeding by hand,,many here have had to do that off and on. It is something that you can train your baby away from after he becomes more established in your home. |
Someone else recently had similiar issue... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-eat-help.html I would like to suggest you change his food to something that has better ingrediants. And when you make any changes to his food, please do it slowly. If you change the food completely, he might get an upset tummy. |
Hi welcome to YT. Kibbles and Bits has a lot of red food coloring in it which can cause allergies in these little ones so you might want to go back to what the breeder was feeding. They cost a little more but these little ones eat such a small amount it really doesn't add up to a lot. Also you might try a little boiled chicken ground up and mixed with the kibble. |
hi, welcome to YT. morgan started out on Iams smart puppy also and then after he adjusted, I slowly changed him over to merricks |
I do not advocate changing a babys food....they have so much stress and adjustments to deal with, they should be spared the only thing they come into this new, unfamiliar situation with, the food the breeder had the baby on. If I was you, I would go back to what he knows, Iams Smart puppy. If he was not eating that, it may have been just because he was trying to adjust to his new home, no momma and litter mates, etc.....Royal Canin has an excellent puppy food and the kibble is formulated for their developing appetites/tastes, and the kibble is softer for little mouths, and it is nutritionally developed for babies. As far as feeding by hand, this is not uncommon and is something we all do as new owners, while our babies adjust. You have to be sure the baby is eating enough to keep blood sugar up....Royal Canin even has a mousse....canned puppy food....you can mix a little with the kibble so that maybe he will eat on his own.... |
I had to hand feed Max his first year. He performed sits for each piece of kibble. I sped things up by playing a "kibble in the Kong" game. You can buy Kongs at pet stores and Target. I have to use the black "Extreme" Kong for my heavy chewers. Max is now a chow hound and eats on his own. |
I'm feeding the new Science Diet kibble and also Wellness in the can. I still hand feed Hannah her kibble every night and she is 6 1/2 mos. old. She simply refuses to eat it out of her bowl. She gets her Wellness soft 2 times a day. I agree with Yorkiemom. Try not to change food and if you just have to...do it slowly. Hand feeding is really helping Hannah to bond with me and she loves the games we play. What's really strange is that she chows down her kibble but only when I hand feed. Little buggers just have to have it their way sometimes (ok all the time) but at least I know that she is eating. |
I hand fed Pixie for the first 6 months she would sit on my lap while I fed her. I fed her wellness puppy and a little wet food as well. |
My mother was the breeder and she feed him iams smart puppy. He has been with me since 9 weeks. I'm going to try can change his food. |
