Hello. I need some advice please Hello, I am new to this forum and new to yorkies. I am taking care of a family members Yorkie and I can not get rid of the fleas. I have treated the house and our Yorkie. We have tried Pet Armour which seemed to help for maybe 2 weeks and then the itching and fleas started again. Then we tried Comfortis this helped for maybe 3 weeks and now he is infested again. What is best for Yorkies? If Comfortis didn't help, should I try a topical like frontline? I was told by the vet that Comfortis would work wonders but it just didn't seem to work for this poor baby. Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated:) |
We spray our backyard for fleas everyother year. This means walking the dogs on a leash for 48hrs before they can go to the backyard. I only use frontline if we are taking the dogs out of town. This is all I have ever done for our dogs. Im sure someone else will come along with more information. |
I use Trifexis and am ok with it, but, that's not all I do. Spraying your yard is good, but you have to do it several times in close succession (about a week apart) to kill the Fleas. Even with the above, they can still get some on them, and I am not beyond giving them a Flea Bath occasionally. I think you just need to intensify your attack. PS: MlF is right, keep the dogs out of the sprayed area for at least a couple days. You can always just do the back yard, and take them to the front to do their business on a leash. Then switch. |
How about Advantix? Or perhaps change to Sentinal instead of comfortis? Do you know where he's getting infested from? Is it from your yard, on walks? If it's your yard, I think the best way is to treat it like others suggested. If it's from walks... Maybe you can try "natural" remedies along with pill/topical treatment you're giving him. |
I also use Trifexis but you have to understand the life cycle of fleas and the fact that they lay thousands of eggs. So even if you kill the adult fleas, a week or two later, the eggs start hatching and you have baby fleas. After you treat your dog (whatever your vet suggests you use) and treat the house (again with what your vet suggests), make sure you vacuum every room in the house, under the furniture, along the baseboards and the furniture where the dog may sit/lay. Then make sure you wash all bedding and blankets that the pup uses. This will help eliminate the eggs and baby fleas. Good luck! |
Thank you all for all of your suggestions. We do take him for walks and that is where I think he is getting re-infested because these are adult fleas, from what they look like to me. He is so uncomfortable. Maybe topical is the best, I don't know, I just want to help him.:( |
Try some Lufenuron:  Amazon.com: Little City Dogs once-a-month FLEA... It's the ingredient used in Sentinel that breaks the life cycle of fleas. If fleas get on the pup, they are not able to reproduce. (Sentinel also prevents heartworm, but hopefully he is already getting something monthly for that, which is why I'm suggesting to use only the component for flea treatment). |
