16 week old lost weight? Hey guys! Been away a while martini ANSI have been very busy wedding planning:) My question is this, at martinis weight at 13 weeks was 2lbs which was a bit of a shock to us because just 2 weeks before she weighed 1.5 which means she gained a third of her body weight in 2 weeks! I told the vet that I think she was eating too much because I can tell her tummy is bigger. Th vet wasn't concerned (she's been 100% healthy since day 1) and told us to make ure we measure her food and put it down 3xs a day so she didn't gorg and then have no food left by 5pm and use give her more.(obviously I gave her more because 1 I wasn't going to let my baby be hungry and 2 bemuse of hypoglycemia attacks which thank god she's never had) Well she turned 16 weeks Tuesday she had her vet appt for shots today and she weigh 1.75 lbs now 3 weeks later. We have been timing the food and cutting back on nutrical (paranoid mom probably gave her more then I needed to) the vet said she doesn't like puppies to lose weight but she appears healthy and is eating/ drinking normally and VERY active:) she wants to check her weight in a few weeks and if ts less again draw some blood to be safe. My question is had anyone had a puppy go through something similar? I am worried sick now even though to the eye she's perfect and playful and her normal lovey self. Any similar experiences ? Thanks to any input!! I will hav to post her new pics tonight:) |
Could it be a different scale or time of day she was weighted or did you cut back too much on her food? Your vet is right, as they should not be losing weight at that age. They are growing so fast at this age. Is it liver shunt that can cause a loss or failure to gain weight? I might be wrong on that! |
She didnt lose alot of weight anyway so it may not be anything but if she continues to lose weight it is best to do the bloodwotk for your piece of mind |
My vet advises free feeding in young puppies. I have never had one who over ate. Puppies need to keep up their food supply for energy. |
Thanks! That's what I'm going with right now is that it wasn't that much weight and last time she may just have eaten because her appointment last time was in the morning . We didn't cut back too much on the food we gave the right amount but just out it down 3 times a day instead of leaving it there and her eating it all out of boredom and then having to add more food on top of the measured amount to make sure she ate at night. So she is eating less but it's the proper amount if that makes sense |

funny.. my vet was against free feeding. I did anyway in that I always have kibble out because I feel as you do. OP.. I think it could be a different scale, or you pup went to the bathroom before this visit etc. Remy lost about 5 ounces last visit (she is 3 years) and the vet laught at me when I was worried. |
