Help! Yorkie Girl or boy???? Hi. Recently lost a yorkie girl...Just wondering, is there a general difference between a boy and girl personality wise? What do you prefer and why? I of course loved my girl, But since I never had a boy yorkie...Just wondering!!:) Thanks!! |
The only difference I can think of is boys lift and girls squat. But that doesn't hold in my house. Roxy and Cozy both leg lift to pee and Buddy my 95 pound squats like a girl. FYI when I rescued him he did lift his leg high and proud. |
Forgot to add, will be getting a yorkie soon from a breeder. |
ISaved myself the frustration and got one of each. There are no specific personality traits determined by sex. Each dog is different |
LOL My boy squats sometimes- all the other times he will lift his leg higher than he stands! I obviously have a boy. I love him so much- he is the sweetest lap dog ever! He is my shadow- the bond between us is so special. I know all Yorkies are different- I have seen girls be super attached and boys, but then I have seen the opposite, so it really depends on the dogs personality. When you start looking and when you find that breeder- I would just recommend going to see the puppies, see which one you bond with. That’s how I picked out Peanut. I really wanted a girl, the girls that I met, I really didn't care for- then I saw Peanut and I fell in love. I was told he was a boy and I didn't care, I knew he belonged to me. I also wanted to give you my condolences on your recent loss. |

I agree |
I have three boys and one girl. Two are love bugs and the other two more independent |
I never wanted a boy for my own pet once I learned about marking but I got 9 mo. old Tibbe under some unusual circumstances even though I went to look at a girl puppy. Once I started home with him in the car, I was so worried he might mark. But he never has and temperament-wise and other-wise, he's just as sweet and loving as my Jilly was. He's a ham and attention-lover but that is probably just his nature and nothing to do with his gender. I think either sex is sweet and have found that to be true whatever the breed. |
Get the one hit characteristics you like. Sometimes you don't have a choice. In my area I can't get a female from any reputable breeder. Most the pups born are males and the breeders always want the girls. Because they seem to be far and few inbetween |
I was going to say a girl, because you can dress them up, but I've seen a lot of handsome yorkie boys dressed up on here! Flip a coin! |
I have only had a girl Yorkie. I can honestly say she is the spunkiest dog I have ever had and I have had some spitfires. I think that terrier personality wacky terrier personality is just as strong in males and females. So do you get to choose male for female? It's always nice when you have a few to choose from. It can be difficult to make a decision through.:) If I had it to do over again I would have gotten two! |
Boy or Girl Puppy ? I think gender differences become unimportant when Yorkies are spayed or neutered. I have raised, trained and loved both female and male Yorkies. Behavior is more a personality thing, than a gender thing. Right now I have five Yorkies. They are all different. My boys are more affectionate and less barky than the girls. They are less demanding about being right next to me, or being first for treats and so on. They do love being groomed and petted. The boys really don’t care about being the top dog and let the girls boss them. They were not any harder to potty train. Abba Daddy is the sweetest most gentle Yorkie I have ever had. He is small around 4 pounds of love and is never in a bad mood. He enjoys being brushed, and napping with me. He puts up with bows, little shirts and neck kerchiefs. Abba prances around after his bath like, look at pretty me. Abba Daddy is a therapy dog. And our little stud. Rubin come from a long line of show dogs. He does not have a good bite or the right coat to be a show dog. He is our beloved neutered grand puba. He is ten years old and kind of set in his ways. He prefers people play, to doggie interaction. For the most part Rubin is tolerant of the other dogs and has only had one fight in all these years. He also smiles a real toothy grin. He is 100 % a Mama's boy. My girls are Gracie Poo, Ginny Joy and Julia Rose. Gracie Poo was a rescue and came with many personality hang ups. She was fearful, yippy and terrible about guarding. It took a really long time to even brush her without getting bitten. Gracie became the Yorkie pack boss, she only defers to me. Gracie nips the other dogs if they bother her. She is a little, selfish, diva. Gracie has a 'had a bad start but, look at me now' attitude'. Gracie is all ‘what about me ?‘ we cherish her anyway. Of course Gracie is spayed. No way would we risk breeding her, we have no idea what her Puppy Mill / pet store genes would be like ! We got Ginny Joy as a puppy. She was from my own Noah’s line. (RIP Noah ) Ginny Joy is very sweet, not a licker, and she does love to snuggle. She is very smart too, as a puppy she learned how open her crate and the other Yorkies too. Ginny would make a perfect only Yorkie, like Rubin she is more into her people than her canine family. Julia Rose is a real brat she is still in puppy mode though. Bouncy happy, playful and way too barky. (she is still learning) She is very smart and keeps us quite busy. So to answer the original question, look for personality, spay or neuter after sexual maturity* and don't worry about picking a boy or a girl. Love makes the perfect match. * I have read a lot lately about waiting to spay and neuter until a dog is sexually mature. Several studies conclude it is better for bones, teeth, organs and personality development. My Vet has convinced me it is a real advantage to wait until Yorkies are at least 1 year of age. |
Personality is dog specific in my eyes. Nilla is my shadow wherever I go (she's napping on my lap as I type), and she just loves everyone. I've heard male dogs tend to favor female owners and vice versa, and maybe that would have been the case with Nilla if I wasn't the one who paid most attention to her, but she's just turned out to be my best friend and I love her unconditionally! I would love to have a male, but I am forever hesitant of marking habits. I would always personally be wondering if he was at home peeing on the furniture or something ... It's just my overly paranoid personality -- I know there are plenty of males that don't mark! Maybe you can go and see the puppies and see which one you click with the most, or ask about their personalities and see which one's habits would best suit your lifestyle? That's all I've got! ^^ Good luck! I'm sure you'll be happy no matter which gender you choose. |
I love my girl so much and after seeing my mom have to take care of an infection her male Sammy had with his privates I think I am sticking to girls. She had to actually put liquid up his privates and wosh it around and then let it pour out it was terrible. I think all dogs have different personality's no matter what gender they are. |
