Senior Yorkie Going Crazy? Hello Everyone, My Hannamaye is 13 1/2 years old. She was never a barker, unless someone came to the door. :) She always has been a wonderfully happy, quite gal. These last few years she would start to bark at nothing, but than within 15 or 20 minutes it would start raining. (Every time) Ok no problem, I could stand a little warning when rain was coming it. I didn't encourage or discourage this. But now these last few months she barks when nothing is going on. No one at the door, sunny day, no bells, whistles or anything. She will just stand in the middle of a room and just start barking. I also have a Chihuahua that can be a bit of a yappy barker when someone comes to the house, but even Tiffany looks at Hanna like she has lost her mind. One thing seems to hold true, is if I come into the room she will do a couple more barks and than stop. Or if I am in the back doing laundry, and she comes to me she will stop. She will bark all the way but she will stop. Now if someone is at the door and I am in the back she will bark, run to me, bark, run back towards the front and back to me. This is her normal behavior. But standing in the middle of a room and barking for no reason is not. She has been with me since she was 4 months old and she has never done this crazy stuff. I do see some changes with her as she sleeps more than she is awake. She will be up and around and when she lays down she is out like a light. In the morning she wakes me up rather than wait for me to wake up first as she use to. I figure she has to pee and can't hold it. Her sight is going and so is her hearing. Is this just another sign of her getting old? I know it isn't a health issue (or don't believe it is) as she was just to the vet for a check up. Have any of you experienced anything like this with your Yorkies? I love this old gal, but I do believe she is going crazy. |
Aww bless her heart. I really don’t have experience in senior’s, but I would honestly just let her do her thing. Since her sight/hearing is going she might do things that she normally wouldn't- Unless she is getting too worked up from it, I would just let her be. She sounds like such an angel. |
My Paris went blind late in his life and would stand and bark because he was lost and didn't remember where he was. When is the last time you had her vision checked? I didn't know Paris was blind until he walked into the vets door. They map out their house and can find their way. You can check his blog if you'd like more info. |
I know what you are going through, one of my past babies who was old has issues like this. It sounds like you baby has :Cognitive Dysfunction Here is some info on it. Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome in Dogs |
I don't think it is Cognitive Dysfunction Thanks so much for the link to Cognitive Dysfunction I read thru it but I don't really think it is that. She wants to be near me more than she ever did in her life. She has always been a "self assured gal" and didn't want to be held. She always wanted to know where we were and such but she was never cuddly. Now every evening she jumps up next to me and leans into me to pet her. Than she will settle down and sleep next to me for an hour or so before she moves onto her next sleeping spot. I am at home with her all the time. She loves to travel and has more miles under her belt than many people. But this weekend we are going out with the new RV and I will watch her close to see if there are any changes to her behavior. The vet said she was losing her vision last time we were there. She still tells me when she is hungry and does not expect to wait very long for her dinner. :D |
