There was a recent thread on this study, which wasn't very good. They won't say how they were tethered, which harnesses were used, etc.

That was my overall concern as well. According to the news, all harnesses on the market failed the tests. However, no specific details were shared.

Well, when comparing dog car harnesses to children's car seats, it makes sense that all harnesses would fail testing. Children's car seats securely fasten the child into the seat - without allowing for much body movement.

Pet car harnesses, however, are a mere tether - which upon impact with anything would cause the dog's body to be thrown about. And, if tethered by a collar instead of a shoulder harness, the dog could potentially be decapitated.

Until an actual car-seat for dogs is invented that entirely straps a dog in place without allowing body movement, then this is a continued problem.

A pet harness is still better than nothing & prevents a dog from hurling through a windshield.

IMHO, the study is a little bit misleading because it compares dog car harnesses to the standards set for children's car seats. There is no meaningful comparison between the two.

This was a study of the performance of pet restraints in car crashes.

I commend the group that is looking into car safety for our pets, but I am annoyed that they would put out such a vague report that is misleading and not helpful.

I believe they tested only a handful of products that are sold as pet car restraint packages -- harness & tether. Of the ones they tested, all failed.

The harness I use for my boys has never been car crash tested, but I believe it is strong enough, and my dogs wouldn't fall out of it, and it wouldn't cause injury to my dogs. My primary concern is the tether that clips onto the harness.

I agree with you. It doesn't do much good in a serious car crash to have the dog on a long tether that allows a lot of movement.

I still believe you should crate your dog in the car. The crate should be held in place by the seatbelts and always in the back seat. I also have a leash on Keno, in case of an accident the rescue people do not have to look for a leash. That is how I have always transported my dogs.

Or even a short tether -- A body in motion stays in motion.... A dog's body can still move about, whether in a crate, a snoozer or a harness tethered to a seatbelt.

I could definitely understand how even a tethered dog could break a bone or have significant soft tissue damage in any car accident.

Having them in something or buckled is better then nothing.
