How smart is your Yorkie compared to Bailey? I just came across this research article about a female Yorkie named Bailey who had learned the names of 117 different toys, and could do a reasonable job of fetching the correct toy on command (although she had trouble learning the names of toys she had never seen before). The article is fairly easy to understand, but if you can't make it all the way through, be sure to go to the bottom of the article where there is a video of Bailey fetching "Gingerbread Man." It's hilarious and cute at the same time! Enjoy! :) PLOS ONE: Vocabulary Learning in a Yorkshire Terrier: Slow Mapping of Spoken Words |
My Peek A Boo knows all the nasty 4-letter words and consistently (100%) hides under the bed when he hears them. (Taught to him before I got him!):D |
Moki can fetch 10 of his toys by name. 117 thats alot |

The smartest thing mine do is know exactly what ice cream truck Mr Frosty is we have several that come down the street and they know his by the music he plays. We always get them an ice cream from mister frosty so they whine and bark when they hear him. As far as tricks and toys I would say they know what is the normal amount for a dog |
Bentley doesn't fetch his toys by name but he can remember where the ball was last seen from the night before. This morning he went right to the hutch and started scratching on it, I assumed that is where he last saw his ball, so down on the floor I go, and sure enough its there. I just think that is so smart to remember that after 12 hours.:animal36:animal37:baseball::yay_jump: |

Joel knows a lot of his toys names but he probably couldn't pick one from a pile lol |
Laddy knows all his toys by name but hasn't got nearly 117. He learns tricks really fast. Kyra is stubborn she learns tricks but only does them when the mood strikes her. The other day I was teaching Kyra to wave and looked up there sat Laddy waving like crazy lol. He had not been taught this before. |
Well after today I would say Bentley is not very smart. This post explains is all. lol http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...kes-again.html |
On a serious note we had a Lhasa when I was a kid. He had the typical easy dog toy two socks one tied inside the other. Then he ended up with a second one. The original had no stripes, that one was called Mr. Sockie. The other was white but had stripes at the top of the sock opening, that was called Sister Mockie. He consistently would retrieve the one asked for. Now here's the kicker. At Christmas we would add his stocking in the mix. If we said get your stocking he would ignore all his toys and run and sit under his stocking out of all the family stocking that were hanging. |

Jackson is extremely smart, he knows over 50+ tricks easily. Lots of other words and things too. But we've never worked on identifying toys! How cool is that?!? What a smart little bugger! |
