Should I be concerned? Ruffy, my soon to be 2 yo male yorkie, has taken to smelling Abby's lady parts. Abby is 8 months old and has not yet come into season. |
has ruffy been neutered, if not all it takes is a quick moment and you will have a pregnant dog, how big is your female |
Abby is 7lbs, but has not gone into season yet. And no Ruffy has not been neutered as we are wanting to breed. Not for gain! |
Mine came into season at about 8 months. She's too young to breed, I'd keep them apart! Bumping for others to post better advise! |
In the nicest kindest way I am stating that the fact that you are even asking such a question is scary to me, extremely scary. There are many factors involved with breeding and the first one to be considered is why? So why are you breeding? What have you done thus far that avails you to thinking you can and should breed? Obviously, you don't have a mentor or you wouldn't be asking such a question. Not for gain? ....why are you breeding? Yes you should be concerned; infact, you should be more than concerned for the health and welfare of your female who is far too young to breed and your male who needs an educated owner before he does the deed to prevent permanent damage that can occur with inexperienced males.... There is a breeder section here, where you should really take some time and read and ask questions please don't begin breeding until you are fully educated on the entire process. Welcome to YT I truly hope you stick around, there is so much to learn here! Take care! |

Separate them now. Otherwise mating can happen in a flash. This means separate rooms and or separate crates. Make sure you know the signs of heat in a female, how long it lasts, etc. Your vet can easily inform you of them. |

I see that you are from South Africa. I know that different countries have different belief/values and attitudes about breeding. Here in North America it is very common to sell puppies on spay and neuter contracts; the future owner of the dog, has no permission to breed the dog. I'd like you to seriously consider that if you breed her, you are literally putting her life at risk; because you are! Is your desire to have puppies worth her life? If you want to go ahead with this idea, I implore you to learn learn learn all you can, and try to find a mentor. A person that will help educate you. You should also try to assist in some births to become familiar with the process, and try to learn all the signs of distress of labour. This is not available on line. Videos are a fine tool, but nothing takes the place of real life experience. I also really hope that you do the breed specific tests for Yorkies to try to insure you are breeding healthy animals. There are many threads here where they are elaborated upon. I assume you know how to search for threads on this forum, if not let me know and I will try to link up a few threads on this thread. |

And I know how quickly it happens!!!!! (different story) |

But my male YT could foretell my females' heat about one month ahead of time. My male BRT only got interested about one week before her heat started. And very interested and focussed butt sniffing was one sign. Another is protective action out on walks, determined urination over her urine, more guardy and barkey behaviour at the door. Every male is different though. If you have two studs in the house, be very cautious now; but perhaps you know that. You might have to separate the studs; at the minimum you need to be on high alert. |
Was interesting seeing the responses tho'. Just for everyones peace of mind Chippy, the male daschie is neutered. |
About how quickly it can happen, I was about 5 yo when I let the "girlie doggie" out because she was lonely in the room and was missing her friend. Needless to say............. I was not popular, my dad had just passed away and in hindsight I can understand why my mom was upset with me as 60 odd days later we had 3 tiny tiny little pups |

I would never ever want to be a breeder, and I am concerned. Firstly because I know Abby is going to go on heat sooner or later and somehow I am going to have to split these to up, and that is going to be a logistical nightmare. Secondly I am wondering why it has taken so long for her to go on heat, and then I saw that there are some female pups that only go on heat when they are a year old. Now I wonder how normal is that? Crazy woman me, maybe I should just curl up with her and go to sleep. |
Well but you did knowingly bring in a female pup with an un-neutered male. And truly as you do know about how quickly matings can happen, and how to prevent said matings. Have you not yet trained your dogs to crates? Some other solution perhaps? Of course you would with your experience have thought of this, and how to handle this, if you wanted to keep both dogs intact. Quite frankly there is no excuse. Your dogs should be trained for crates, and or you should have already schooled the dogs to what-ever plan you had to keep your female safe while she is in heat. Separate rooms what-ever. Hoping and praying this female does not get pregnant when she is still a puppy herself. |
Hi there, I am by no means an expert, not a breeder nor a biologist, but yes I would be concerned that an intact male was freely around to sniff a young bitch who if she is not already in heat will be at any time soon. Boys will be boys. You have had experience of puppy litters, did boys sniffing girls play a part in the conception? I am starting to get worried about my baby boy, he is not neutered yet and is generally either in the house, in a secure back garden or on a strong leash when outside (with me or my husband at all times) though he does get off for a good ball chasing run in our local park most days. Dogs will scent a bitch in heat a mile off and have accomplished unbelievable feats to get to them, if a readily available female is in the same house, I would bet you will have a pregnant little baby girl on your hands soon if she is not already so. Good luck, I hope they haven't tied yet and you are able to completely separate them. |
My origanal question was should I be concerned, as I have not seen any other physical signs of her going into season. Opening up this type of conversation was not where I was going. I do have a plan. |
You have your answer. She will probably shortly go into season. Full males do telegraph when they can smell the hormonal changes that presage the season. I am cautious better to be safe than sorry. Separate now. |
Thank you, thats what I was wondering about. I am really sorry that I upset / angered anyone on here. I seriuosly just asking a simple question. I just did not expect the reaction I got. So I do apologise once again. For the record, Abby and I have taken up residence in the granny flatlet away from all the males in the house! |
