Milo keeps licking his paw He started yesterday licking his right paw. He has been doing it all the time. He will b walking and stop to lick. He woke me up licking. I had to put him in the floor but he would jump back on the bed and start again so I put him at the end of the bed and told him no. He just kept on licking. He has never licked his paw this much. I have looked at it and I don't see anything. He still plays and runs on it but if he's not doing something he's licking. The only thing I can figure is that I gave him 2 pieces of pasta the night before. He is on a grain free food. Any suggestions? I am going to take him to the vet today if he don't stop. |
Maybe a bug bite? I hope Milo has stopped licking. Maybe the vet can prescribe a dose of benydryl to see if that helps. |
May be allergies Hi there! What food is Milo on? 80% of my patients walk into my clinic with allergies. This is sounding like allergies, and even though you only gave him 2 pieces of pasta, that might be enough to trigger an allergy. I posted an article on the subject here at YT. Allergies work like a spectrum. The lower the immune system, the wider the spectrum (more allergies). Best wishes, Giulio Ferrari Clinical Nutritionis |
I would get a vet to look at that paw. Never know what he might be dealing with and could save him some trouble if you'll get on it early. Might be nothing much but better safe than sorry when it's your little Yorkie. |
Paw I had this issue with my boy, he kept licking one paw only. I washed it and looked but could not see anything. When he had his dental last week, i asked the vet to look carefully at his paw. He found some black road tar under the quick of one nail and it got infected? He cleaned it out and the dental antibiotics did the rest. That is just what happened here, but it could be allergies or?? |
I feed him natural balance duck and potato grain free. I was going to take him to the vet today but I had to babysit. They kept him busy so I didn't notice him licking his paw as much. If he keeps me up tonight he is going to the vet first thing in the morning. I did get to thinking that something could have stung him. |
A sting is a possibility too. Often the licking gets rid of the offending article and they heal themselves. Hope Milo is better soon. |
first make sure its not an injury or an infection but if nothing comes up it may be a food allergy. And yes, they can only lick one paw when this happens. Chibi does his right paw too, I have him on limited ingredient food, once a week baths and occasional animax ointment to keep it under control but it's never 100% normal. Good luck, I hope its just something easy because food allergies are no fun. |
Probiotics I don't want to sound like a broken record, but I can't emphesize enough how important probiotics are to boost the immune system... Helps them combat any allergic reaction, including to bites. Giulio Ferrari Clinical Nutritionist |
Yup, probiotics can definitely help and it can be an allergy. Also, as said, it could be an injury, a bug bite, a hot spot.... Definitely is uncomfortable and itching if Milo is licking. A vet needs to look at it asap to get the right diagnosis and treat. Don't wait too late..it's almost the weekend. Prayers for Milo! |
Milo just got back from the vet. She looked at it really good and it was red and raw with a little puss in it between his toe. but she didn't find anything in it. She gave him 2 shots and an antibotic 2 times a day. It seemed better but last night and this morning he was back at it. Poor baby :(. I wishes I had taken him yesterday. |
Milo Poor baby. Glad you got him to the vet and got the paw looked at and treated. He probably licked the offending article out, perhaps a thorn or sting, and it just left the infection. It is so hard to see what is going on in between their toes. My boy would not me near it when he had the nail problem! Milo will be fine now when the antibiotics get working. The lesion probably still hurts a bit and that is why he is still going at it. Thanks for the update and hope he is over the infection soon. |

You're taking good care of him :) We had a similar problem with our little one a few weeks ago. We had been out at the park and visiting family, and when we got home, ChiChi was limping when we got out of the car! We took her to the vet even though it was off and on because she was licking it like crazy and it was driving us nuts. The vet said it was a blister, not sure what caused it, but gave us medication to put on it and within a few days she seemed fine! I hope your little Milo is feeling better soon. |
