Please Forgive Me... 3 Attachment(s) It's been such a long time. I hope all is well. It is always a pleasure to see all the new furbabies. I just knew Reign would change my life and I will never forget the wait. Oh gosh it was horrible, but so worth it. YorkieTalk always feels like home. Reign is 6 months and loosing teeth :D. Am I the only one that thinks it is so cute? and he brings me his teeth (well the ones he wants to give me) :yelrotflm !! He is not marking, but I really don't know what to do about neutering. How did you finally decide? He is just short 4 pounds, but he is still little. So, he may gain more weight. He's obedient, doesn't lift his leg, playful, and well socialized. Will this change over the next few weeks if I don't neuter him? Of course I had to attach some pics ;) Attachment 387703 Attachment 387704 Attachment 387705 |
Reign is a little doll baby. I would wait longer to have him neutered. I don't speak from experience because I've only had females, but I've read that particularly with males it's best to wait until their growth plates are closed. This is an updated report by Dr. Chris Zink about early spay and neutering. It applies to all dogs, not only canine athletes. http://www.caninesports.com/uploads/...tions_2013.pdf |
I think it's up to your vet about when to neuter. If you're not intending to breed or show, then I'd do it. The procedure is a little less dramatic for the boys than it is for girls. There's not only the leg lifting but also the humpty dumpty. Neutering stops the testoserone which may make him less inclined to do the "male" thing. Many people have male yorkies that never lift their legs and others have yorkies that do. I had a male many years ago that was neutered early because of a hernia and he never lifted and never humped. Also, my girl Lucy really filled out and gained weight between months 6 through 12 -- so there's plenty of time for your guy to grow yet. Frankly, I'd neuter as soon as the vet gave the go ahead. But that's just me. Good luck. Tracey |
Your baby is adorable. I've had two males and both of them were fixed at 6 months. One just over 4 lbs at the time (now he's 7 lbs.) and one that was right at 3 lbs at 6 mo. They both did just fine! |
I am having Barney "tutored" this Friday. He is a little over 4 pounds. However, his frame is big. He is 11 inches tall and 9 inches long. So he is very skinny. The vet postponed his first surgery 2 weeks ago and put him on a high calorie prescription food. The vet feels that he is now ready for surgery. I am hoping that the surgery will help him gain weight. I noticed that he lifted his leg to pee on my wall a few days ago. So I am ready to get this done before he starts marking. He's also been amorous with my arms and our throw pillows lately. I have had two other male dogs. The first one was not fixed until he was around 3 years old. Waiting was a big mistake. We just didn't know any better. He would take off every time he got a whiff of summin summin. I waited until Charlie was a year old because I thought it would be best for him. He didn't mark as badly as Max did (still does nearly 12 years later). Barney will be 6 months in a little more than a week and I am having his done now. If your vet feels he is big enough, then I would let him go ahead and do it. |

Thank you all for your insight. It really is a tough decision. I am really trying to come to terms because he will need at least one tooth removed. So, I need to decide whether to neuter or not because he is not going under twice because of this. I did hear that it would be best to wait with males and I will review that artical. If Reign was a girl hands down he would be neutered. Maybe I should take the same approach? |
Reign is adorable!! I had Huey fixed at 6 months, 1 day. Unfortunately, the leg lifting and marking had started by 13-14 weeks and was only slowed by the neutering(pees on every other mailbox on walks, not every one). The humping has net really been a problem with anything other than 1 particular toy. So, i would go with whatever feels right to you and your vet. :D |
What a cutie pie! |
