Ear Scratching ??? Jasper has been scratching behind his right ear today. I've tried to look in there...he is squirmy as h@#l...so the dh helped me. He has a lot of hair in there. Is that normal for a yorkie? I hate to sound ignorant, but I'm used to short haired dogs. So, this long hair is a whole new ballgame for me. The ears don't smell. Since the rest of the pack nor the cat have mites (we checked), I'm wondering if its allergies? The only new food we have introduced is green beans. He has his 1st grooming appointment this Friday. She will be cleaning his ears. The groomer is also at the animal hospital where my vet works. Should I make an appointment to see the vet also? I'm not trying to be an overly paranoid yorkie mom. I just don't want him sick or uncomfortable. Thanks for those who reply.:) |
Wow...nobody? :( Okay. |
Yorkies do have very hairy ears. Some say keep them plucked, others say leave them alone. I started off not plucking Kiko's ears. Then she started scratching a lot, no smell, just lots of scratching. I took her to the vet. She had an ear infection. The vet said that because she had so much ear hair, air couldn't circulate allowing the ears to be warm and moist, good enviroment for bacteria. The vet plucked her ears (showed me how so I could do it myself) and gave her an antibiotic ointment/gel that I had to put in Kiko's ears for about a week. Whenever Kiko's ears start to get too hairy, I pluck the hair. She hasn't had an ear infection since. Hope that helps. |

I agree that you don't want the hair to get too thick in the ear. We use a flea comb daily to comb ear hair. It removes loose hair and I don't have to pluck often. We also use a cleaner with a drying agent after baths. I agree that you should have the vet take a look at your baby's ears. Infections don't always present with a smell. Best wishes. |
Thank you for the replies. I had no idea about hair growing in his ears. So glad I now know and how to groom and clean them. We pick him up at 2:00 from the groomer and he will see the vet right after. Boy is he really going to hate me after Friday. :( |
Glad he's seein the vet. |

Praying for Jasper. Sorry it took a while to get some replies. I wasn't on that late last night. I'm glad he's going to the vet. I have a feeling that it may be some infection - maybe yeasty from moisture. I don't pluck Mandie's ear hair but I've always said that if she ever has any trouble at all with her ears, I will. Let us know what the vet says! |
