Adult food? When do you switch to adult food? Brutus will be the BIG ONE in 2 days and I have to buy food for him today but should I still be buying puppy food or should I buy adult now? Thanks! |
My vet said anywhere from 9 mo to one year you can switch to adult food. I've read on here most people switch at one year. |

Great question!! Seems to be some differences of opinion here! Can we get a consensus? I am starting to think about this too. I think my old dogs were switched at 1 year, but can't remember, it's been 11 years. So what say you, resident experts? Robbie? Villette? Kimberly? Anyone else? Thanks! :D |
I was told 12 - 14 Months, be sure to mix the Puppy food with the Adult food. Adding more Adult, and less Puppy food each day, untill you have only Adult food. The slow change is much better for their tummies. :D :D Good Luck! |
My vet told me they could switch at 12 months old. My dogs were getting a little chunky from the puppy food so I went ahead and made the switch. They are 12 months and 11 months. |
I got back from shopping and buying the adult food was an experience in itself! He's eating Nutro Max puppy so I decided to stick with that brand but they had a few differenct choices and I couldn't figure out which one to get. Anyway I bought the Nutro Max mini chunk. I gave Brutus one to try and he put it in his mouth and then spit it out about 20 ft.! I thought great now he hates it but he ate the one he threw and was begging for more. I put a little in his dish mixed with the puppy food and he pushed the puppy food aside and ate the other. So I guess the transition won't be as bad as I thought! :) |
I was told 10-12 months, and I think it matters how they are doing, weight wise,and how much they eat, Bailey was quite the eater,and getting a little portly! SO he didn't need all thats in puppy food, I switched him at 10 months and he was fine.. and still eats like a Little Truck Driver ( one of my Mom's lines.) ha :D |
My dogs - (14 week Yorkie - and 4-year-old Bichon) eat dry Iams (small pieces) and human safe food. Not to worry - I have gone over this in detail with my Vet. My dogs eat chicken, meat, cheese, cottage cheese, brocolli, salad, rice, eggs, vegetables, love carrots, and many other foods that I eat. They are not allowed junk food. They do not get fried foods, potato chips, cookies, candy or anything like that. They no salt or pepper added to their food. The get a varied diet - not a lot of any one food and very little of some - but a wide variety of different foods. Their dry Iams is out all day (they do eat a bowl ever couple days). They are fed their other food in the evening - sometimes twice a day, but it is not left out. Works for us. I hate dealing with canned food. My dogs just don't like it and most of it is usually thrown away. One bonus is that I eat a better diet myself because my dogs eat a lot of the same foods that I eat. Neither is overweight, and they are both very active, happy, and healthy. Carol Jean |
