Puppy Vaccinations There might be something on here about puppy shots but I couldn't find it. My question is about the number of shot needed. I have read that the whole series of puppy shots is not necessary and sometimes causes problems with the immune system. Sophie had shots from the breeder at 8 weeks, from my vet at 13 and 16 weeks. The tech that gave her last series of shots (2 hypo and Bordetella up the nose) says to come back in two weeks of another Distemper and Paravovirus. I say she had all she needs, except Rabies, till the annual shots. My Sophie is 4 months old and weights almost 4 pounds. However, with adult boosters, many vets are embracing protocols that vaccinate less often. Once given annually as a rule, adult vaccinations are now more likely to be recommended every three years. I don't want ot over medicate! Any imput is helpful. I need to make my decision by Friday since we are going out of town for a month. My breeder says she thinks that sometimes the vet does not recognize the shots from the breeder and still gives them the 3 series of shots. She thinks she has had enough too. |

I basically follow Dr. Dodd's vaccine protocol more or less. I definitely think puppy shots are important. DHPP at 8, 12, and 16 weeks, I think it is. Then rabies as late as you possibly can (I waited until 6 months). Then do a booster of DHPP at one year, and a booster of rabies. Then I won't be getting anymore vaccines for him, except rabies every 3yrs as required by law. Either way, I wouldn't ever do more than every 3 years (which is what AAHA hospitals follow). |

I was nervous at first with getting vaccines for my puppy as well. I heard a lot of stories about puppies getting very ill from them. But they say its better to take the chance and get them. When I got him, he already had 1 set of shots and all his dewormings. And since he did fine with all that, I went ahead and did the second set and he did great with those also. So I will be doing his last set at 14 weeks. They told me I can do it at 16 weeks if I wanted to, but it wasn't really needed. And then I will be getting him his rabies shot when he is 6 or 7 months while he is getting neutered. I think I will also be doing the 3 year rabies shot. |
I follow dr. Dodd's protocol, but limit it to two. And boosters at a year. From then on I do titers. Legally no vet can demand you vaccinate for distemper, parvovirus. I never do bordetella either |
Thanks for the help. I have now decided she has had enough shots until I get her Rabies. I don't think I will get it until about 6 months. She is too little and those shots hurt. She was mad at me the rest of the day after her last puppy shots. Both hips! I would be mad too. |

We are very active, too, go to dog parks, state parks, hiking, etc. He is protected enough from his previous vaccines and research is proving this over and over again. I refuse to do bordatella anymore. Jackson has had the instranasal one 3x now (for various reasons) and he's either gotten kennel cough from it, or gotten it while the vaccine was supposedly 'protecting' him from it. Completely done with bordatella. |
