Karen silkwood breeder? Is my dog a puppy mill dog? Yes. I believe so. If you read my info we just recently got Riley from a neighbor. The only paperwork we get for him was a predigree certificate and his first 2 puppy checks. Riley had remarkable hair quality and beautiful eyes. Both vets we have taken him to always comments on how beautiful of a yorkie he is. Last night I was looking over his papers bc I started to question why he was so big for a yorkie (he's 12.4lbs) thinking well maybe he was just born a bigger boy. He has horrible joint problems in both hind legs and I thought it was just associated with his size. The more I read the more my stomach started to sink. Our Riley was born in march 2008, by May 5th 2008 he not only had kennel cough he had such bad kennel cough he had a collapsed trachea. He was also on that same date purchased by a petland store in fairfax VA. I went back thinking wow that's really young to have been weaned, not only was it really young it was quite a distance he traveled. Riley was bred by Karen Silkwood in Oxly MO and by 8 weeks he was trucked to a pet store in fairfax. Is he purebred or inbred? For us, it honestly doesn't matter. We love him as is and he's a great pet. What bothers me is this person who calls the self a "breeder" would breed dogs is such deplorable conditions to point an 8 week old has a collapsed trachea. I tried to look her up and found another forum from a year ago with her named mentioned. Come to find out, she's a "commercial" breeder AKA a puppy mill. I also found where she has a case against her for a beagle she bred. How is this legal? How can we take these types of places down? Those poor pups it just makes me so sick! |
Welcome to my world. Yes your pup is a puppymill dog. Yesterday it was announced by the ASPCA for the billionith time that 98% of pups at Petland and Pet stores like PetLand are from Puppy Mills. Petland is a sure 100%.... Stick around you will learn a lot from all of US who are in your shoes. Love that baby cuz I swear they are so incredibly special and they need us... |
people like that make me sick |
FYI: I was trying to remember where I had heard that unusual name before....Silkwood......then I remembered....that was the name of the woman Cher played in a movie she did about a lady getting over exposed to radition at work, and her fight to get the place closed down for serious OSHA violations....Karen Silkwood....that was the workers name! |
ughh how disgusting. How can people treat animals that way!? It's so sickening. |
It breaks my heart to think of what our poor pups early life was like. He is definelty a blessing for us! I just can't stand this happens all around and most people have no idea! Every time a pet store pup is bought its contributing to the puppy mill manufacturing. It's awful. I want to find ways to educate and bring these puppy mills down!!! |

I feel really badly for both your puppy and for you. There is just nothing like a "good deal" on a dog. It's so important to do research before you purchase and I am just as guilty as you. Our Princess Sophie wasn't a puppy mill dog but came from a backyard breeder whom I am now convinced really doesn't know what she's doing. I would be a better breeder and I know I don't know anything about it. LOL If only we had YT before we laid down the $ to bring them home. I like you am so in love with our pup that I wouldn't want her to be anywhere else than in our home, she's wonderful, but now that we know what breeding really means, I won't make the same mistake twice. If not for the pup's sake, for our own. Love them as much as we can!! |

Lol yes most of the research I found was about the movie and not the breeder lol. I'm so glad we aren't the only ones! I always remember my mom telling me that puppy store pups are puppy mill dogs. I never really knew what that meant. Riley was given to us for free by a neighbor, but with all the money we've spent fixing the little fella up we probably could've just gone to a (reputable and responsible) breeder and bought a puppy. But we wouldn't change having him in our home for any bit of money! I'm glad I went back over his paperwork the neighbors gave us for him bc we would've never known. We now know to keep a closer eye on him! |
When I got my Callie I had no idea the extent of puppy mills and when I finally found this website I learned a lot about the extent of puppy mills, back yard breeders, and brokers. Which lead me to figure out and research I bought Callie from a broker and when I did further research her breeder is an Amish puppy mill in PA. It made me sad and so angry puppy mills are allowed. Callie has LP and had to have one fixed she also has ct and skin issues. I would not trade her for the world and am glad I got her because what if someone else got her and gave her up because she was to big or had all these issues. I prayed for God to help me pick the perfect pup when I was going to pick Callie and I think he did. I would love to make it illegal to sell puppy's in pet stores because that would close down a lot of puppy mills. I think anyone that could knowingly support puppy mills is just as much of a monster as the puppy mill owners. |
This is a really stupid question, but where can we post the names of the BYBs at? I looked, and I just can't find a place to post at. |
