Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo for Pups
 

Hey guys!

I've been away from YorkieTalk for about a week now. (Ever since I got Fred). He is such a bundle of joy, but at the same time.. boy oh boy is he hyper. We have wood flooring so he'll run around and then at times he'd slip and slide on his butt and go sideways. Then, he gets back up and starts running again! He's all over the place, weaving in and out of rooms. I'm trying to potty train him right now. It's so hard because he's so unpredictable! He really has no time after he eats that he poops or pees. He just poops and pees all over the place, and I pat him on the butt and say "No" and then I put him in his pad and say "pee pee" and point to the pad. Then he'll just look at me and run out of the cage and around the house again!

Well, besides that I have a question! I'm giving Fred his 2nd bath tonight before we leave out of town for the weekend. He's going to be staying with my boyfriend's parents cause the absolutely adore him!
The first bath, I used puppy shampoo in a "Clean Fresh Scent" but when I was done, his hair wasn't as soft and he still smelled like "a dog" (that smell dogs get after awhile of not bathing)!

I was thinking about buying Johnson and Johnson Gentle Tearless Baby Shampoo when I get on lunch, but I'm not sure if that is good for him or not? I hear some people use it, and some don't because of the pH? :confused:

You shouldent really use human shampoo on a dog,especially on a dog whos hair is its main feature;) Human shampoo has a different PH to doggy shampoo and it can dry out their skin on the long run..it can also cause itching and dry breakable hair.
Find a doggy shampoo that you like,there are LOTS out there that have wonderful smells,you just have to do some searching:) I know people that use the johnson shampoo on their puppys faces because they think that their normal doggie shampoo will hurt the dogs eyes,but this isnt the case..infact,a human shampoo (even baby shampoo) can actually cause the eyes to be sticky and have more discharge than normal because of the ph so its always better to use the right shampoo.To wash the dogs face all you have to do is work up a lava in your hands,rub it gently but quickly onto the whole face and then rinse,remember to hold the ears down to stop any water entering;) I use vitacoat products,they are a little expensive but well worth it.Good luck on your search for shampoo:)

use a conditioner after using the baby shampoo but I suggest buying "Plush Puppy" its for soft and long coated dogs....IMHO its one of the best available, to order it's only online the product comes from Australia.

Then I spray a bit of "miracle coat" which is a detangler and adds shine

If you like tearless shampoo they have it at petco and petsmart. Its called Magic Coat tearless puppy shampoo. I use it. Ialso use the magic coat conditioner/detangler that you spray in.

i used baby magic on my 2 my vet says its ok you can use j & j he'll be fine

Baby shampoo and a good human conditioner for color treated hair. Yorkies have people texured hair and I always get compliments on how soft and silky my dogs hair is. Vets tell you not to use human products because they want to sell dog shampoo to you!!

Eek! haha Some still say it's good, some still say it's bad.

Maybe it's up to the dog's skin? Boy, I'd hate to see him flakey but at the same time I love the smell of baby shampoo! :(

Yorkie hair has many characters as human hair BUT not the same PH balance. IMHO using human shampoo can be used in a pinch NOT as a rule.

My vet has never tried to push me into buying doggie shampoo either,infact,he gives me free samples of great shampoos.But he does tell me what human shampoo (even baby shampoo) CAN do to a yorkies hair and he doesnt explain this to me to make me buy shampoo,he tells me this because he knows how fussy I am about my babies hair.Yorkies do have similar hair to us,but here the problem isnt the hair,its the SKIN.Their skin doesnt have the same PH as our does,so human shampoos are not suitable for them.Human shampoo can dry out their skin which will eventually lead to dry,lifeless hair.Conditioner doesnt fix this as it works on the hair,not on the skin so it will only cover up the problem for a while.
I used to use J& J on Ladys face when she was little because I thought it was good,but when my vet told me that the the gunk that kept coming out of her eyes was due to the baby shampoo (the unbalanced PH was causing irritation),I stopped using it.The problem clearned up within a week and now she seems to have cleaner eyes (no boogers).
As I said before..when you are dealing with a dog whos main feature is its hair,then looking after it properly will always pay off on the long run.

I know what you mean about them smelling good after you bathe them. I just bought a shampoo that is for puppies and it scent is baby powder. I haven't tried it but the shampoo smelled exactly like baby powder. I bought it @ Petco. They have all types of scents & their for puppies. I don't remember the name i have to look when i get home but the shampoo is blue.

My vet does not even sell regular shampoo (only flea and medicated shampoo) He said neutral baby shampoo would be ok, but the best is a doggy shampoo..there reason for that is, even if the ph is neutral and says its is tearless it can cause serious eye irriations (and i know of this happening when the dogs eye gone "burned" by the shampoo) So, in my opnion, it is just easier to get doggy shampoo:)

NEVER USE HUMAN SHAMPOO ON A DOG!!!!! It just strips their skin! For now, go to PetCo, PetSmart or another local pet store and buy a very good puppy shampoo and conditioner. When you have time to actually buy a really good shampoo, go to www.petedge.com and get the Tropiclean oatmeal shampoo and the Tropiclean Oxy-Med conditioning rinse. I use this in my groom shop for all of our Yorkies. puppies and adults. It is wonderful for their skin and keeps their coat tangle free and very soft. Hope that helps!

Most dog shampoos are made for all breed, shed or not, in other words generic...we all know yorkies are special because they dont shed and have very human characteristic when it comes to there hair....

human shampoos are made for our PH balance not a Yorkies because of that human shampoos tend to be drying to their the coats and their precious skin causing flaking...

Choose a dog shampoo made for long coated dogs they tend to have ingredients that conditions their skin (proper PH balance) and coats. Follow up with a conditioner to add sweet smell, shine and keeps the mats at bay.

Don't use a medicated shampoo unless necessary, they will strip the skin from their natural oils and avoid all fea shampoos.

I'm reading all of these replies, because I was told by my breeder to use J & J Baby Shampoo for my yorkie, as that's what she uses & she shows. I haven't bathed him yet, going to tomorrow, but I guess she was wrong :confused:
