Worried about neutering! Kipper is just 3 1/2 mos old, but was asking vet about when I should get him neutered and to be honest, I got a little worried! He said the longer we waited the better because they're such little dogs and surgery can be a bit more dangerous for them...my goodness does anyone know if they ever DIE from this?? Also, he is about 3 1/2 lbs now...any educated guesses on how big he'll get? Breeder said should be about 5 lbs, which would be great, but wondering if he'll really stay that small! Thanks for any input! I'm still very new at this site so am "cautiously exploring"! |
Hi and welcome to YT :) Your little Kippir is little indeed :) I haven't heard of small dogs dying, but Nena and Rufus are my first small dogs so I don't have much experience. I agree with the vet on waiting untill he is full grown to have him neuterd. ;) Don't know how big he will be. I know there is some sort of chart where you can get and idea of how big your pup will be. Someone else might be able to help you with that ;) |
Don't worry yourself sick or stress out over the thought of getting your boy neutered! You still have several months to go ;) I wouldn't be overly concerned about the safety of a neuter (of course there is always a risk when you put your pets under)...it's very routine and generally non-invasive with a quick recovery time. We got Teddy when he was 9 months old and scheduled his neuter after his first vet appointment for the following week. He also had a couple of retained teeth removed while he was under as well. And hopefully someone here can post an updated link to a puppy growth chart. Toki weighed 3.1 pounds at 10 weeks and is a little less than 8.5 pounds at 1 year 9 months. We would love to see pictures of your little Kipper! |
I would say anytime after 6 months is ok. Not many dogs die under anesthesia its a lot less then people think. My vets office is about 5 years old although she was a vet at another vet hospital for a long time but in the 5 years she has had her own practice she has only lost one dog. Be sure that you get the before surgery blood work though. If your vet is uncomfortable with small dogs you may need to look for another vet who specializes in smaller breeds. |
Thankyou everyone. I feel better about it. Sure appreciate the input. I am trying to get a profile pic up of Kipper but it keeps rejecting it as too large so have to try to figure out how to fix that...I am not by any definition "computer savvy"! I'm doing good to turn one on!! |
