Ear Taping; What do you think? 1 Attachment(s) So Jack is now 14 weeks and his ears are as floppy as they come. lol When we first brought him home at 10 weeks, one would stand occasionally, but now they just flop (unless he looks up, then both stand). Do you think we should tape them? Or just leave them the way they are? Our previous yorkie, Max had smaller ears and they stood up without taping. Is it just an aesthetic thing, or is it really better for them? Attachment 387412 :animal-pa |
I guess it is what you like. Our little girl was twelve weeks old and we had the breeder put some tape on. When we got her home our vet taped her ears and now she has beautiful ears. If you want them up just have someone that is familiar on taping ; it is not hard to do. Hope this helps. Susan |
Up or down ears all yorkie are cute! I happen to like yorkie ears that are up but it's all up to you and the way you like them. Sometimes the ears stand up on their own and other times they need some help in doing so. I shaved 1/3 off the top and back of Chloe's ears and then taped them up. I only kept them taped up for 3 days. After three days I took the tape off and they stood and never flopped. I still keep her ears trimmed front and back 1/3 off the top. She's 9 months now. |
I know we don't get a vote but I love your Jacks floppy ears. They are so cute! I would just leave them. |
I love floppy ears! My puppy is 12 weeks old and still has floppy ears, sometimes one will stand up but then it's back to floppy again! Lol. I dont think I am going to tape them ... |
If you want them to stand the hair on the ears need to be shaved like Janice said 1/3 front and back of ear. The weight of the hair will not allow the ear to go up. |
This may be crazy but I actually wish one of my pups had floppy ears. I love them. Super cute.:) |
Hmm...yeah everyone we meet loves his ears (they're quite big for his little head, so having them stand may look quirky lol) But they were trimmed the day we picked him up and that's when the one would stand by itself. He won't be at the groomers for awhile so...I guess we'll decide until it's time for his first haircut. I am leaning towards leaving them floppy though. :D I wasn't sure if one or the other was better for them. A friend of ours said he may be prone to ear infections if left floppy :-/ Quote:

I think he looks cute the way he is. I only had one that had floppy ears and she was so cute. |
I think he's adorable how ever he looks!! With floppy ears or up ears, He's adorable!! :) |
Welcome to the big ear Yorkie Club (okay not really a club but we could start one). Sophie Kate has big ears, they stand up but the tips flop over. I shaved them, taped them and tried everything. Honestly I love a floppy ear Yorkie. |
Thanks for your input, guys! I guess he will be left floppy. To be honest, I love when he runs and they flop all over lol. I think it's the most adorable thing ever. |
2 Attachment(s) Bella's ears are floppy too, and I think they're cute. They stand at the base and curve over at the tip--they remind me of the Flying Nun's hat, LOL! |
That is how Sophie Kate's turned out also. |

I never knew about taping when I got Callie but I'm a fan of not doing it. I think if they are gonna stand they will and if there not there not. |

They are cute with and without standing ears :) I never taped Rufus' ears ;) |
floppy ears are cute too :) Molly's ears more stood out rather than up but now they are up, her head has grown with her ears lol, Mickey has half floppy half stand up at 5 month old, all mine have stood up without been taped, IMHO I would never tape ears just think its wrong. Be floppy and happy, your pup is so cute :) |
Pebbles ears are floppy and I love them that way. She did have an ear infection when she was a younger puppy but she hasn't had any problems since. I think Jack looks so cute with his floppy ears. Yorkies are such adorable dogs whether their ears stand or flop over, Jack is going to grow up to be a cutie no matter what! |
Oakley will be 7 months on the 18th and he's got the floppy ears. I'm taking him for his 2nd groom tomorrow and I was gonna ask the groomer for her help in taping them, but after reading this thread, I'm not so sure anymore. |
I've given up on Bentley's ears. He's 6 months old now. Dumbo's ears are still flopping. lol I will keep shaving them, but done with taping. |
My last yorkie had floppy ears. It's very very cute. I would say, other than aesthetics, there is a reason for taping the ears. The floppy ear can be more prone to infection because it's nice and moist, warm and enclosed. I used to check my boy's ears all the time. Lucy's never had an infection and the ears are clean as a whistle! Best wishes, either way, it's easy to maintain as long as you check them regularly. Tracey |
Ran into my groomer at the supermarket and she said if they stand, they stand. if they don't, they don't. So Jack thanks you all for getting him out of having to walk around with tape on his head. haha. |
Taping I have had good luck taping them when they are younger. By 6 or 7 months they will just take the tape off. |
