I live in a house but have an unfenced yard. Also we have a lot of hawks in the area, so Lucy is never outside without me and a lead. We walk her 3 or 4 times per day. Small dogs can get plenty of exercise indoors. My kids and I constantly play "catch me" or "catch Lucy if you can" in our family room. She runs around, up on and off the couch, around chairs and tables, through the exercise equipment, etc. Trust me, we get her worn out. Lucy just had her well-visit and is in tip top shape! With a yorkie, you can basically play/exercise almost anywhere! That's one of the things that's great about this small breed. Don't fear the dog park! Some have "small dog only" sections. Also, you'll be surprised at your little terrier scampering about with the bigger dogs. They think their Rottweilers!!! Toughies all the way. Best wishes, Tracey |
I know how you feel! Poor Molli has never known a yard, we got her when we moved to TX and have been stuck in apartments longer than expected. I wish we had a dog park closer. I try and play with her but it's just not the same as letting them run free in a yard. Fingers crossed we get a house soon, for the dogs sake ;) |

We have a yard but no fence. I walk Gracie at least twice a day. When the weather is bad we play indoor fetch. We have several small balls that she loves to play with I have a 50 foot light weight tether for the backyard. When I am out there doing gardening she follows me around and we play fetch out there, too. She is never out alone. I'm sure there are a lot of people who do not have fenced yards. There are safe ways to exercise these little ones without a fence. Gracie would make my life miserable if I didn't keep her exercised regularly. She is so much easier to live with when she has had the activity level that is needed to keep her out of trouble. |

I'm an apartment dweller. Off leash time for us would have been a trip to the dog park or a trip to the neighboring school's playground. For the neighboring schools playground we wouldn't let him off leash if there were other people there but most days no one was there during non-school hours. |
Anne, I share your feelings about not being able to give my boys off-leash time. We have a fenced-in backyard, but it is full of trees and we have hawks. Our neighbor's Yorkie was attacked by one. :( Like you, I give my boys plenty of walks daily and we play indoors, so they do get lots of exercise. We did find a baseball diamond, fully enclosed, that we can let the boys run free on occasion, but I don't feel 100% comfortable doing that. |
I also live in a apartment and Riley is ok with it, (he doesn't know any different) me or my partner take him to the park (2 min walk from where I live) everyday for about a hour, we let him of the leash and he loves to run around, I think he is better off then if I did live in a house with a garden, as I wouldn't take him out as much and he would only have a small garden to run in rather than a huge park! I live in an apartment. Miki is allowed to run freely because I don't wish to take her out just yet. I try to put her on the treadmill and even set speed to lowest possible speed it could go but the minute her feet touches it she hops off. :) |
