Bentley has forced me to expand his world Well, it's official. I can no longer block off the living room when needed. He discovered that he can jump up on the arm of the furniture to gain access. I have been leaving him at home this week. My oldest sleeps till about noon so it'ls like being left alone for half a day. He needs to be used to being home alone during the day instead of the grand humans because my parents and kids go on vacation for a week starting the 14th so he will be home alone all day while I'm at work. My big worry is he likes to get on the back of the couch and love seat. That's what keeps him out of the kitchen and the area right by the front door. He's yet to make the dive off the back of either but I'm worried it is just a matter of time. He's 6 month's old and just a hair over 7lb short stature, but he's freaking brave. I'm waiting for his terrible two's to be over lol. |
lol they give you a run for your money for sure. hope things go smoothly during that vaca period. |
Ha bless him, Bette loves to sit on the arm or back of the chair as well. I put some magazines on the arm and top as she doesn't like the feel of them. It stops her climbing up when I don't want her to. They do grow up too quickly lol it doesn't seem 5 months since we got Bette, and now we have just gotten an 8 week old new yorkie 3 days ago. They are learning from each other which is great most of the time. Enjoy the younger days while you have them, I almost miss the chewing everything up days!! But I guess I have it all to come again now! x |

Don't know what to do to keep him off the back of the furniture. To complicate things I have a cat and usually the back of the furniture is her refuge from Bentley. Poor Nutter. :( Congrats on the new baby. :D |
At 4 months, 4 pound Bella took to getting on the sofa and jumping off with a heroic leap. It's onto carpeting, and she has not hurt herself--she seems to enjoy it. She also jumps off the bed now, but again, it's onto carpeting. I'd be more concerned if it were onto a hard floor. She is sensible enough not to jump off the back of the sofa--yet. She seems to be a good judge of what she can and cannot do. If you are concerned about what your little one might do while you are not at home, you might consider getting an x-pen to restrict his movement while you are away. |
As a precaution get some steps and trained him now. I have steps for the bed and all of the sofas. Also they can still get hurt on carpet as well. Brandi is now up to using her steps 90% of the time. I cringe the other 10% especially when she jumps off the bed. When I see that, I put her back on the bed and tell her to use the steps to get off the bed. She's finally getting that jumping of the bed is a bad thing. |

I agree, my Bentley just started something new where he jumps up on the couch and then pounces on is ball, then back up to the couch and keeps doing it over and over. I do fear he will hurt himself though. Every day its something new with this "terrible terrier" lol:animal36 Hopefully its just a stage. |
Can you tape or drape some tinfoil over the backs of chairs and couches? Many dogs will avoid that like the plague - won't get anywhere near it. |

I'm hoping he never decides to jump off the back. He walks across the back like a tight rope walker, but I can tell he's still pretty scared to jump off the back even though he wants to. This boy is a mess lol. |

It's funny sort of. He gets on the back of the couch as I leave. I tell him down and he hops off the back, back onto the seat. Then he puts his front paws on the back of the couch and peaks over the top like, "is this ok mommy?" |
