Hello all! I have been reading for several weeks but have not really posted yet! We pick up our new baby girl next week! The last 5 weeks have been excruciatingly long! I think I have everything in order but just thought I would ask the experts!

We have her kibble (Wellness for small breed puppy formula)
Bowls, brushes, and beds!
Snoozer car seat
Crate
Doggie stroller
Nutrical/Nutri Drops
Chew toys
Playpen for home and a travel pop up version and one for the yard for potty training
Collars, leash and harness....oh and Brighton charms for her collar :) Her name is "Brighton" BTW
?can you think of anything else?

I also wondered how much I should feed her? The kibble says 1/2 cup per day but that seems a little low? I was thinking of 1/4 cup 3xs per day? I can't free feed because we have two Siberian cats that think they are dogs and they will eat anything left unsupervised!

Also am wondering what you think about this idea? My wife and I are teachers so we will have the next 10 weeks of but we do run a summer program for kids and I can take her to the job with us and be able to take her out hourly? Is this a good idea or will it confuse her being two different places every day? She would be in my office in the travel playpen.The alternative would be to just x-pen her while we are gone each day from 7-1 but I am afraid this will delay her house breaking....we don't really want to pad train her.

sounds like you are all set, remember if you get a collar get a breakaway one so if it gets caught on anything they will not choke

Thank you...I dont think the collars are the breakaway type. I will get one of those to be safe. Is the other type safe as long as I don't leave them on 24-7? Any other advice? I am really looking for expert input on the training question :)

Snuggle Puppy for new transition?
 

Hi, I'm a Newbie too - and hope to be adding a little Yorkie to my family.

I accidently went into Petland and talked with the associates. They told me that ALL of their puppies go home with a "Snuggle Puppy" and that it helps to soothe them during the transition. It's a little stuffed animal that vibrates and gives off some heat. I don't know if it's a marketing ploy - but it seems cute and logical to me.

Also, do any of you have any good recommendations on care and training books? I found a lot of books at the Amazon bookstore. If there's a definitive source of information - I'd like to start there.

The snuggle puppy sounds like a great idea. On one of our visits to spend time with our girl I took the breeder a baby blanket and a little stuffed animal that she will put down with her littermates for a few days before we pick her up. Hopefully this will help to comfort her when we bring her home. As far as books...Yorkies for dummies is very good, and of course there is really no better information than what is available right here on YT from reading threads. :)

If its little kids I would leave her at home. Also make sure you don't take her anywhere until she has had all of her shots.

Yes they are little kids, but they will not have any contact with her. I would leave her in my large office bathroom and take her out to the side yard where the kids will not be. Also this is not an area where any other dogs would possibly be. Probably safer than my own back yard. Is there still a worry with her not having all of her shots? She will have had her first, and second series.

If there are any wild animals that get into the side yard, there could be problems with some of the diseases they carry in their urine and droppings. But if you are with her the whole time and watch her and don't let her pick up and eat stuff, and the side yard is free of wild animals, she should be okay. And is the side yard escape-proof? Yorkies are notorious escape artists, so if it's not built like Fort Knox, don't leave her out unattended. My Bella is puppy pad (indoors) trained, and I've only just begun to start letting her walk on grass for extended periods, 2 weeks after getting her final puppy shots.

Hello and Welcome to YT. "Yorkies For Dummies" is the first one I recommend. ."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book. These are excellent resource books .Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak.

Follow the directions on the food bag. Every food has different amounts. I hear you about the cats. I have one that thinks she is a dog too lol. Make sure she eats 3-4 times a day.

Thank you!!! I do have Espree puppy shampoo but I did not get conditioner...is there one that is for puppies or just any Epsree condidtioner? I will post pictures when we get her home next week.

The side yard/field is not secure, it is actually our schools interior courtyard area. I would only take her out with leash and harness. My biggest question about it is...will this confuse her too much? or will she just simply learn that going "potty" outdoors in the grass is the place to go...either at the school or at home.
