Ugh, a thick
 
We've had Nena for 4 years now and Rufus for 1 year.
This is the first time I saw a thick :eek:
We've never had any problems with thicks. Nena has always been clean.
Yesterday wen I got home from work I took them out.
At home I saw Nena playing with something, when I got closer it was a freaking huge gray thick, bleh!!
I immediately checked the dog's but thank goodness they were clean!
Should I worry?

As long as you removed the tick, I wouldn't worry too much. My boys have had many ticks and have been fine so far.

They are yucky though!

They are!!
The thick was on the ground and nothing was on the dogs.
I don't have anything to use on the dogs to prevent thick.
Do I have to buy some?

I think the most popular tick prevention is Advantix (I or II). Depends on what heartworm prevention you use. Different pups sometimes have different reactions to the same meds so whatever you decide to go with, I'd suggest you keep an eye on them for the first couple days.

I would talk to your vet about what to use in your area. I'm not sure which products are used in Europe. We use Frontline Plus and I check my doggies out every evening to see if they have any bugs on them.

I think they use frontline here as well.
I'm free tomorrow so I'll pass by my vet and ask them what to buy and how to use it.

I just find it weird because it's the first time I find a thick :(

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a good method of searching for ticks on the pups body other than just feeling for them with your fingers?

I use this comb when I'm checking Rufus (got it on a first aid kit)
Nena is completely white so she is easier to check just by looking.

The only thing about the comb that worries me is that if the tick gets caught, I might rip the tick's body off the head while I comb.. Does that make sense?

Frontline Plus is what I trust most to keep ticks away and kill existing/attached ticks

I didn't know much about Frontline (Plus) but it seems very popular too so I did some search.. Thought it was good info if you're trying to figure out which to try out first.

I went to the vet today and they gave me Advantix Spot-on solution for both of my dogs.
They said that it was the best thing to use..

Great! But I suggest you check them at least once a day with your hands/fingers... Depending on how bad it is in your area, even with Advantix the ticks will latch on. I'm having that issue where I am so I check Magnus twice a day. :( I really hate ticks...

The thicks aren't that bad here..In four years this is the first time I see one..
But to be on the save side I'll continue checking them ;)

Lucky you! If I had a choice, I'd skip walking Magnus during summer. *sigh* I found another tick last night while running my fingers through. This year just seems particularly bad.

I´m worried :(
Just got home from work, walked the dogs, starting checking YT and then I notice Nena acting weird.
When I turned around and saw her, she was pulling something..
I stopped her and she stood up, when she stood up I saw hair from her tail missing :eek:
I always leave the hair on her tail on the same length and you can clearly see that it's not at the same length..
I'm afraid she was pulling her tail hair :(
And I'm scared it might be the advantix! But I can't know for sure because she was in heat the last couple of weeks and most of the times when she is in head she starts biting her behind legs or starts acting weird and I have to constantly keep an eye on her.

I would try washing off the advantix first off. See if that slows or stops the chewing. The other problem you can remedy by getting Nena SPAYED :thumbup:

Yes, I've talked before about why she isn't spayed
And coming here made me realize that it was the best thing to do.
I've talked with my vet about it and she said to wait 3 months after Nena goes in heat in order to make an appointment and that will be this august

When you first said "heat", I thought you meant temperature wise. LOL I agree with Sugarmamma. You can check manually for ticks till you find something that works. The missing hair on the tail seems little more urgent at the moment.

Yes, the missing hair is more important right now..
I will wash the advantix off and keep you updated
