Baby teeth extraction ... advise please!
 
Hi, I'm a very new member - just joined today so that I could get y'alls opinion/advice regarding extracting baby teeth.

I have a sweet 9 month old little girl who weighs 2.9 lbs. She is healthy, well-behaved with a loving personality. She appears to have no trouble chewing her toys or eating her food - Performatrim Ultra (mini).

Last week our Vet informed us that her adult teeth have come in and she still has her baby teeth - essentially 2 rows of teeth?! Her recommendation was for 14 extractions. Naturally we would prefer not to [ut her under aneasthetic and have 14 teeth pulled :( but we want to do what is best for Grace.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Suggestions? Thoughts?

Yes baby teeth are often retained and removed surgically. Most of the time the baby teeth are pulled at the time of a spay or neuter. My dog Teddy had 6 baby teeth removed at his neutering. Anesthetics are very safe these days, assuming you vet is using either isoflourane or sevoflourane gas.

Retained baby teeth are a common problem in Yorkies and as stated above, they are commonly removed when you have the pup spayed/neutered, so you dont have to put the baby under twice. The anesthesias mentioned above, are what you want to be certain your vet is using....I do understand your concern, probably because of the tiny size of your baby. Pre op blood work and IV infusion before, during, and after the procedure will also help head off issues.

Thank you for your input, its greatly appreciated. I'm wondering if she doesn't have the extractions would there be any negative effects for Gracie?

Yes food will get stuck between the teeth and cause decay and rotting. It can also mess up the alignment of there teeth.

Has she been spayed yet? You could have the spay and teeth done at the same time that what most people do. I did.

rotting teeth, gum disease, organ infection from bacteria from the rotting teeth.....is it safe to assume since you dont want to have extra teeth removed, you probably wont want to have teeth cleaned annually?

Short answer is she will have rancid breath. Longer answer is she will develop periodontal disease, which the bacteria can travel into her system and make her sick and in some cases so infected get septic and could die.

Get the teeth pulled while under for her spay. Spaying will also help eliminate her chances of cancers greatly,and totally remove her chance of pyometra. Plus you won't have to worry about the messiness of her being in heat, or her running away to mate.

I needs to be done for the oral health of the pup. Teddy had 3 teeth pulled when he was 8 months old.

Yes I had one of my baby's that I got when she was 1 1/2 years old and her previous owner didn't want to have her full set of baby teeth pulled. I have an amazing vet and she reassured me my less than 2 pound baby could handle it. She came thru like a trooper and eating was so much easier and she was a happy baby for 11 years. Ask lots of questions and be comfortable with your vet and you are good to go
