suggestions for smooth transition when moving We are moving in a couple of weeks...Ughh! Allie has been in our current house since she was 4 months she is almost 4 years. I was wondering once we have all of our stuff in place will she recognize it and help her to feel more secure. Good thing I am off work for the next 10 weeks so I will be there so she isn't by herself. |
I wish I knew the answer for you... I moved with my boys, but it was into my boyfriends house after 3 years of dating, so they were already familiar with the territory. I would move and keep them out of the commotion and then take them home where their 'stuff' is all set up and waiting, walk them through with a leash (so they don't mark) and show them their new home. I think for the most part, as long as you are there, they will adjust to any living arrangement. Thats how my boys are anyways! Good Luck!!! :) |
I'm glad you'll have a little time off to help her get acquainted with the new place too. I really think this can be a very exciting and happy time, and I believe walking around the neighborhood and leaving her scent will make her feel like she belongs there in no time at all. I hope you can take a little time out each day to do this. Congratulations, hope you love your new place. |
My Tip: Keep her secured in a crate or a locked room from the time before you start to move boxes out until it's time to put her in the car, and then keep her on leash. At the new home, take her in first and secure her in a crate or a locked room until all stuff is moved inside. Sometimes just packing freaks them out, and they will dart out a door to try to avoid confusion. |
I am excited! My family needs a fresh start. Its been a couple of rough years to say the least with my troubled teenage son.the house is a one story ( the other was 2 Allie wasn't allowed upstairs because of carpet) and ....it ALL TILE!!! Every single room even closets!!! So the princess can go wherever she wants! Not potty though ;) I have baby gates so she will not be able to dart out. I'm thinking on the big moving day , she can go to the spa and get pretty so I will not have to worry about where she is. I am very viligiant about always knowing where she is and not letting her out unleashed. I like the idea of walking her around the neighborhood. It would be good for her and me to get some extra exercise. |

In my limited doggie experience I have discovered that our fur kids home is us. The place we live is a house, but as long as we are there, it's home. My little craigslist gift has made herself totally at home in three days...like she has lived here forever. We even did errands with her today, and she fell asleep between us on a pillow. I wouldn't worry too much with a move, after all, everything she associates with love is with her! |
