New Yorkie mom I am a new mommy to a precious baby named Molly. My husband bought her for my birthday this past April. I never dreamed I could fall so in love with a "dog" as this is my first. I have raised 3 great kids and suddenly felt the urge to have a puppy. Needless to say I completely shocked my entire family. My husband and I are learning as we go, but our most trying dilemma right now is that Molly gets really playful when it is time for bed. She gets her biting on to the degree that she causes us to bleed. We did start her sleeping with us on the third night and while we do not regret it we would like any advice on getting this under some sort of control. |

Hi & welcome to YT. Congratulations on your new baby. You really don't need to let that biting get out of hand & it sounds as if it is heading in that direction. When I got my first little dog about 14 yrs ago, she was a 12 wk old mini-Schnauzer & loved to bite anything & everything---us included. I immediately started trying to find a remedy for that as it was very painful---LOL. In one of my dog books that I obtained it said that you should jerk your hand away & very loudly say "OUCH" to let the dog know that it hurt you. After doing that just a few times, my baby girl quit that foolishness & we never had another problem with it. Now as far as the issue of sleeping with you, I don't know b/c we never started that. My babies have always been crated at night until I felt they would be safe & secure just sleeping in their beds. Good Luck! |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I tried everything to get my 1st puppy to calm down at bedtime. She also slept with me (played mostly the first night). In desperation, I tried growling at her, imitating what I thought her real mom would do. It worked, stopped her in her tracks, and she layed right down and went to sleep. Once she learned what I meant when I said 'No', I no longer had to growl at her... took about 2 weeks. |
Hi! I'm a new mommy too! My girl is named Lexi. She bites a lot and I'm having a hard time stopping her. I tried doing no and she doesn't care. I rolled up a paper and tap her with it when she bites. Still hasn't been working, she thinks its a toy. So I'm stuck as well. Lexi used to sleep with me but now she prefers her bed on the floor :) hope everything works out for you! :) |
My Molly is 7 months old and bites all the time - especially my feet when they are bare. I have tried the NO louding the OUCH loud and pulling hand and feet away but she still does it. I say no bite too - doesn't matter what I do she does it anyway. Good luck with your Molly. I hope I can break mine of this soon. She sleeps in her crate but really hates it - she barks and throws herself around in it for about 15-20 minutes every night. I started out with the crate and it hasn't gotten any better. I even put her in our room in her crate and she did the same thing. She sleeps in her crate in the downstairs bathroom so we don't have to hear her barking. I don't know what else to do or to tell you but I hope we both figure things out soon! By the way I brought her home at 12 weeks so it isn't like I just got her either. |

Even though I got my Bella at 8 weeks of age (this was before I was on Yorkietalk ;)), she had learned bite inhibition from her mother--she still chews my fingers, but in a gentle, "gumming" kind of way. On the rare times (maybe twice a week) that she bites harder, I say "ouch!" and turn away, and she knows that she made a mistake and doesn't do it again, at least not right away. But I do provide her with toys that she can chomp down on harder--Nylabone, a tied rope chew, and various small, but durable, stuffed animals. I make sure to schedule some playtime with those toys--I hold on to them and she tries to pull them out of my hands--and that seems to get the heavy biting out of her system. I figure that she's into biting at this stage of her life because her adult teeth are beginning to come in and she feels some irritation in her mouth that she needs to soothe with her biting. She loves it when I let her sit in my lap and chew the Nylabone while I hold on to one end of it so it doesn't keep falling on the floor. |
