Legg-Calve-Perthes disease :( Does anyone know anything about this disease? Taka was diagnosed with this at yesterdays vet visit after limping on his leg for a week :( I posted a thread in the sick/injured section also. |
I don't have any personal experience, but here is an article from petmd: Legg-Calvι-Perthes Disease in Dogs | petMD |
Yes, I have had experience with it and surgery was done ... FHO which is a femoral head ostomy. I have two personal pups who had the surgery .. one for Legg Calves Perthes and the other for hip dysplasia. They did very well after the surgery. |
It's a condition of one or both hips caused by a lack of blood supply to the bone, which causes necrosis in the hip joint(s). The fix is to remove the hip joint(s) and leave only healthy bone. In small dogs it's easier bc they weigh less. The muscles then take over to do the job that the hip was intended to do. |
My Mini had surgery on both rear hips/legs whatever. It's not something you can fix without surgery. It has to be repaired immediately, they can not live with it, it is expensive, very expensive....but worth every penny.... I can not stress enough that a Orthopaedic specialist really should do this surgery. |
thanks everyone for the advice. I will be very adamant about surgery when he goes back for his 1 week follow up. I'm not sure which vet to choose for surgery since I am new to this country and don't speak even a little Japanese. So to find a board certified vet is going to be hard. I don't want him to be in any more pain than he already is but I also don't want to just rush into it not knowing anything about the vet doing the surgery as mentioned in my other thread by ladyjane. what to do?! what to do?! |

My dog Widget had this surgery. They will always walk differently but at least with less pain. Widget was 9 months when the problem was evident. Good luck with your pup. |

OP no advice to offer but I just wanted to say I hope it all works out and you find a good surgeon. prayers ur baby has a successful procedure and full recovery. |
Zoey had this surgery. The rehab time was LONG and involved but well worth the months of building up the muscle in her hip. Good luck to you and your little one. |
Toki was diagnosed with Legg Perthes when she was about 8-9 months old and ended up having the femoral head ostectomy performed by an orthopedic specialist when she was around one year old. It cost a little more than twice what my regular vet would have charged but even my gen. vet immediately referred me to a specialist (that is how you know you have a good vet...when they know to send you to a person with more expertise in a particular field). Toki walks fine now...her left leg (the one operated on) is smaller than the right (if you feel them, you can tell) but other than that she walks normally and has no pain in her hip. I know it can feel overwhelming with a diagnosis like LCP but the FHO is a very successful procedure with an excellent outlook. A lot of us have been through LCP, including the surgery and recovery period and would be more than happy to share our experiences to help you out along the way...keep us posted. |
Both of my girls seem to have issues with their hips. I can feel the hip sockets moving around when I push on her bottom to help her sit (when trick training or something) As soon as the insurance kicks in I will have them X-rayed and hopefully, if there is an issue, it will be covered :hands: |

I hope it is just ligamentous and not LCP. |
