Need Dehydrator Recommendation
 
With everything going on with treat recalls, I'm reconsidering making my own treats for the pups. For those that have a dehydrator, can you recommend one that won't burn a hole in my pocket? Thanks!

I have an Excaliber...I did a whole bunch of research on dehydrators, because I knew nothing about them....mine was expensive, but I needed the large one because I do lots of jerky for all these babies...but the thing about the Excaliber is the way the trays are placed in relationship to the fans/heat/blowing across the meat/trays. I did not want to be having to reposition trays so that all the meat was done evenly....they come in different sizes.....the smaller ones are not as expensive.

When my current dehydrator dies, I will replace it with an Excaliber. The shape and fan placement just makes more sense than the round ones.

Yep, Nesco Harvest. Established company you can rely on in future to offer supplies, extra stacking trays, etc. Love it. Easy to clean, too. Have you also tried freezing treats? I took the standard recipe for pumpkin treats and add fruit to half a batch and mixed veggies to the other. Then freeze and take out a few days' worth at a time and stick it in the frig. Liberty loves his "yummies"!

Thanks for recommendations. Couple questions..

1. How long does it usually take to dehydrate:
Fruites
Veggies
Meat

2. How long have you guys had the dehydrator?

I've only had mine 6 months or so and all I make is beef jerky lol I'm an addict :P. How long depends on what kind of meet you're using and how thin it is. I usually make ground beef jerky and usually takes around 5 hours I think. I got the book out to look at fruit and vegetable times for you but they're all different. the min time on the different veggies range between 3-6 hours and the max time is 10-20 depending on the vegetable you're drying. fruits 3-18 min 8-16 max. If you have certain fruits and vegetables in mind I can look them up for you :)

I stopped by Costco to see what they had.. Saw a brand called: Wiring Pro I couldn't find much info/review on this particular model. DHR60SIL It was only $40.

Hobbette: I'm guessing you make snacks for your furballs. What do you usually make for them? I need to find snacks that's low fat... I weighted Magnus last night and he's GAINED!!! *sigh*

Actually the snacks I made are usually for us lol. My 2 usually get fresh vegetables when I'm making dinner, but I've never dehydrated anything for them. Yuri has a tendency to turn his nose up at his dog food if he starts getting many meaty type treats, holding out for the good stuff 8-/ so I try to stick to lighter less satisfying foods that don't really fill them up. They absolutely LOVE the white crunchy part of lettuce near the core.

I have a Nesco one. It depends how much are you going to use it. I am going to get a Excalibur. I use mine a lot with fruit, herbs, dog treats.

Do you have the regular trays or the stainless steel trays?

I got the 9 tray stainless steel tray unit, with the 26 hour timer...I cant remember what I Paid for mine...seems like it was over $500.00...like I said, I wanted to get the very best I could possibly afford....and when I figure in the savings in vet bills and the heartache of watching a baby die because of tainted doggie treats purchased, it has more than paid for itself!!..I like stainless steel trays, figure they would last forever....I think this thing comes with a 10 year warranty....I have had my Excalibur for 5 years...not even one second of problems....I absolutely adore my machine!

I was checking the website and I saw the SS trays I thought they looked nice. Are they wearing well? Any rust?

No rust and they are wearing well....I would guess if the trays started rusting, maybe the company would replace them....these units are first class and the company seems to be as well....like I said the quality of the machine has not provided me the opportunity to have to deal with replacement or repair....NOT COMPLAINING!!!!!
