I need some help. I do not own Yorkshire Terriers and this is not currently an ad where I will be giving one away. I had no idea where to put this and am hoping someone can be of help. I own Lhasa Apsos, but today I was heading out with my husband and a very small Yorkshire Terrier was in our front yard. He came right to me but was wary of my husband. We found no identification on him whatsoever! I absolutely hate it when people don't take care of their pets. He doesn't even have a collar. It was very hot today, I live in Illinois so we brought him onto our front porch and crated him in one of my other dogs crates. We gave him water, food, a blanket and a few toys and bones. Later tonight we plan to search him for fleas and possibly give him a flea bath. I have no idea what to feed him! We think he weighs between 3-5lbs. My Lhasa Apso's are around 15-20lbs and they eat 1 cup a day of Blue Wilderness. Is this suitable to feed a Yorkshire Terrier? I know nothing about their temperaments, though this one seems friendly. We're going to put a found add on craigslist (without pictures, I'm not handing this sweetheart over to just anyone) and on facebook. In the meantime, I don't know if he has his shots so I won't be socializing him with my dogs, but he will be kept in an air-conditioned environment. With him being so small, will he be warm enough? Also, do Yorkie's naturally part down the middle of their backs? This one has a nice part, a docked tail and while his nails are long they aren't broken. We think he's an inside dog because of this and he seemed to be very aware what inside was. He was also good on a leash, but didn't potty outside. Anyone who can answer my questions, I'd be incredibly thankful. :) |
Hi there! Sorry nobody saw this and replied last night. If you are still needing some answers for food, Blue Wilderness is fine. I would feed the Toy or Small breed variety of it. Since you aren't sure how old the dog is (at that weight, he could be 6 months to years), I'd just make sure he gets about a 1/2 cup a day of the food. He doesn't have a collar, but perhaps is microchipped. You can take him by a vet's office or a shelter to see if they can scan him. Posting on Craigslist is good but be very wary on the responders ok? Thank you for taking care of this little guy until his owner's can be found. They are probably so worried. Also, report to this to the local shelters (even if you keep him to care for him). That way if the owners check with the shelters, they will know :) |
Thank you for sheltering this little pup until the owners can be found. Alot of Yorkie owners don't put collars on their dogs when the dog is kept inside because of choking hazards and because Yorkies can develop collapsed trachae easily. I can't add on what more to do to try to locate the owner but agree with above post. Please take to a vet or shelter to see if a microchip can be located. Good luck finding the owner. |
thank you for taking care of this little guy |
You are an angel for giving this pup a safe haven :D People on Craigs list have been known to do some very unsavory things to get a hold of a dog to either abuse (like sell to backyard breeders) or resell for money. If you can find any markings or such on the dog that only his owners might know about about would be a real help in your search. Please keep us on Yorkietalk informed and we will help you. Thanks again! |
Thank you for sheltering and caring for this little soul while you attempt to locate his mommy! Have him scanned for microchip first! No collar could simply mean his owners are well aware of the dangers to a Yorkies trachea.....most do not collar our Yorkies, if we do, we use break away cat collars. I am praying for a microchip! An ad in the lost and found section of the paper may help locate the owner...care must be taken as many unscroupulous people will do anything to get their hands on a Yorkie....you will have to carefully screen anyone that claims that baby is theirs. As suggested, if you stay here wityh us, in the event you are unable to locate this baby's owners, we can probably help assist you to rehome that baby with someone that loves and knows Yorkies and will have nothing but the best intentions at heart for this little man! YOU are going to have to be very carful!!! YOU are going to fall in love with him very easily and very quickly!! |
Thank you for sheltering this one. You asked if he would be warm enough, inside in your a/c. Well you might want to purchase a small Tshirt for him, just in case, and line his crate with a blanket. There is a stickey on here on what to do with trying to find the owners of the dog. Some vets will offer free or very reduced rate for wellness check ups in these circumstances. I would advertise in the local vet offices, pet food shops, local grocery store (if they allow it), also put up flyers around your neighbourhood. If there are apartments nearby, see if you can put one up where they can be seen. Also on your car/truck. If he has a microchip that might make life easier for you to find his owners |
Before the night was over, we had found his owners. I thank you all for your insight and I found a sticky about finding owners, which helped us a lot. Poor guy was sweet as can be though, and I'm glad to know about the collar thing. Learn something new everyday. :) Thank you all again, I'm glad he's back home with his family. |
that's great you got him back to his owners. I bet they were ecstatic, and extremely grateful. It's so great you helped the little guy :D |
