more peepee woes :((
 

i do not understand it...my dog could not possibly have a UTI after 2 rounds of antibiotics...the 2nd round given just as a precautionary because testing showed no signs of a uti......




yet he still squated to pee in the livingroom after having JUST been out to pee 15 mins before!!





.....and he's been reliably going to the door for at least 2 weeks....every 10 minutes!! i just dont get it, i'm at my wits end!!

You are right, he shouldn't need to go every 15 minutes. Did the doctor do a urinalysis and culture & sensitivity? I know he had 2 rounds of antibiotics, but I think they should re-test to make sure there isn't a problem. Sometimes infections can be stubborn, or there might be another issue.

How long have the potty accidents been going on? When he pees in the house, is it a few drops or always a puddle? At what age was he neutered?

he was in belly bands for the longest time but i got tired of using them so i decided to stop taking the lazy way out and house train him properly...so...among all this we are still learning housebreaking

ever since we started diligently housebreaking he goes to the door every 10-15 minutes to be let out...and DOES squat and pee a few dribbles out...

he did have a uti but was treated for it...but when he still was peeing frequently i took him back...she did another urinalysis and said she couldn't detect any blood or leukocytes but she would put him on another antibiotic just in case....he's still doing it though

he pees normally when he hasn't gone out for awhile but in the middle when he's trying to go every 10-15 minutes it's a few drops at most all the time....doesn't have any accidents in his crate or anything so if he's been made to hold it for a few hours & over night while in the crate he pees normally

Would you consider using a piddle pad? That might be the easiest and most effective way to train him. My boys are both pad and outdoor trained. If you do go the piddle pad route, you would always have to make it available. It wouldn't work if used only sometimes or part time.

If you still want to do 100% outdoors, keep in mind that little dogs need to go fairly often (although not every 15 minutes :)).

You have a big training job because he was accustomed to having on a belly band.

If you have not already, institute a potty break schedule. Take him out immediately when he wakes up (from sleeping or napping), right after meals, maybe another 30 minutes later, every time he gets excited (doorbells, play sessions), and before bed. Also, in the early stages of training, you may want to treat him like a puppy and take him out every hour.

If you work and cannot supervise this much, I highly recommend the piddle pad plan.

When he potties in the right place, praise him profusely like he just performed the best trick ever. Give him a little treat (it can be a single piece of kibble). When he has an accident indoors, do not scold. Just clean it up with an enzyme cleaner to remove the scent and to prevent him from wanting to return to the spot.

training isn't the problem...he stays in a crate while i'm at work and at night...dad takes him out 3-4 times throughout the day for a pee, a walk, and to get a drink/eat if he wants to

we have been working on house training for about a month now, maybe a little more and he's caught on quite quickly...he does go to the door to be let out every 15 minutes only to dribble out a few drops of pee and come back in

he has had 3 accidents in the last month...2 were in the first week and then the one last night...

my problem isn't training him or taking the time to do it...he IS catching on

but this going to the door every 15 minutes business is getting ridiculous, exhausting, and it's worrying me that there's some kind of underlying health issue and that it's NOT behavioral, yet the vet says his urine is fine

I would take these concerns to your vet, and if she says nothing is wrong or doesn't address them, I would try another vet, perhaps a specialist.

Usually one urinalysis isn't enough information to determine if there a problem

if he was human I would say it sounds like he has a prostatis infection/inflammation. However it sounds like he does still have a uti, although the vet checked him out, did she send his urine away to a lab to be cultured?

no she just tested it for now and gave him the antibiotics as a precaution just in case...she said she'd send it out later if the problem didnt go away....which annoys me cus im gonna have to pay for another vet bill now just to take him in and get that done

therefore the only conclusion my [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]vet[/COLOR][/COLOR] can come to is that hunter's need to go out every 15 minutes and squeeze out a few drops of pee is completely [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]behavioral[/COLOR][/COLOR]...

he's definitely catching on to housebreaking and that outside is the place to [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]potty[/COLOR][/COLOR] but if he wont hold it more than 15 mins we're never gonna have a [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]house [COLOR=green !important]dog[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR] that i dont have to stress about and watch 24/7!!

any ideas on how to teach him to hold it longer while outside of the [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]crate[/COLOR][/COLOR]?! he does great inside the crate but goes to the door every 15 mins while outside of the crate and if i dont take him out he'll piddle on my [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]carpet[/COLOR][/COLOR]!!!

the vet mentioned some kind of medication that makes the urethra (?) close up a little and make them not feel the sensation to have to go as much but i am hesitant to put him on something like that because i dont want to give him any [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]health [COLOR=green !important]issues[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR] and it seems kind of cruel

I would get a culture and sensitivity (C&S) test. Depending on which antibiotics were prescribed, they may not have been adequate against the infection, since different ones target different types of bacteria.

we did val...everything came back completely normal...

they did mention a medication we could try that helps dogs that have incontinence issues something about it strengthening the muscles down there...

but it seems expensive and he'd have to be on it the rest of his life....i'm considering trying it though

he was super good today until this evening he decided to just squat and pee in the livingroom....

i hate it....i love this dog to death but he's giving me so much stress i'm beginning to genuinely dislike him :( i know it's not his fault and he's either not understanding or he's stubborn but...it just sucks

it's not good to have a love/hate relationship with your own dog :(( because honestly if it was just me i'd rehome him but he's my daughter's dog and she'd be crushed so i cant...i just wish we could get him housebroken

i hate to put that nasty belly band back on him but i'm fearing we have no other choice...i just really really really dont want to go that route again :((
