Yorkie Grooming I just got my yorkie, Sammy, who was neglected. When I got him, his coat was so badly matted and tangled, the groomer had no choice but to shave his entire body (except for his head) almost down to the skin. I think he looks adorable like that (I have before and after pics posted in the pic forum page), but a number of other yorkie owners have told me that this is a terrible haircut for him. Is there a "standard" groom for the breed, or do we all just do whatever we like? |

You did not get a "haircut" you did a much needed intervention. Shrug your shoulders and just let those comments pass on by. Now as a show Yorkie owner, yes there is a very minimal haircut we do; as we want all those long flowing silkey tresses. As a pet owner, that long hair requires a whole lot of grooming. Not something the average pet owner wants to go through. So there is some mid-ground here. There is something called the Joey cut. It leaves the leg hairs relatively long, the back shaved, with a skirt over the body usually a short skirt. The head hair or topknot - is something you will need to decide on, like do you want one, and if so how long do you want to keep it? Just look at some of the avatars and some of the pics in the photo albums to see what you would like to grow your wee one into. And Welcome to YT! |
You could do whatever you like I shave kudos my yorkie except his head and we give him a moehawk!! |
You helped that baby be comfortable. He's not a show dog so you do what cut you like AND he likes. He'll let you know if he'd rather have a trimmed up cut versus the traditional "show" long hair. Ditto to everything Gemy said :) |
My girl has the exact same cut for the same reason! You did what needed to be done. And good for you! It'll grow back, people can say what they want. Don't let em get to ya. |
It is your choice what cut you do. Some like the long flowing traditional style of a yorkie. I dont like all the maintenance and grooming of a long coat so I keep mine short but a little longer on the face and ears |
He is a little doll. Hair cuts are a personal preference thing for the most part. I see your in Florida so you probably live in the air conditioning for a good part of the year. He may need a shirt or something to keep the cold draft off him when it is cool inside. These dogs don't have undercoats like most dogs do so some of them can't maintain their body heat very well. A shirt may help keep him from getting sunburned while his hair is that short, too. My girl loves temps to be tropical at all times. When I have the AC on or even a fan she is looking for a blanket to cuddle up in so we have clothing available throughout the year for her. I keep her hair long most of the year. She gets it cut just under the belly in the summertime. She is so small that the length grows back by winter. Even with her hair long she is still sensitive to the cold. I hope your new little guy loves his new home and has a wonderful time living the life of a much loved family pet. |
I think he's adorable! His hair will grow and I would just try a few styles until you find what you like. |
Your Sammy is adorable It's not like you did it on purpose. You did it for his well being. One of the members posted this link about haircuts. It my help you. Just go with what you both would feel comfortable in ;) Yorkshire Terrier Grooming at Roxie Delux in Birmingham |
Love the link to the grooming site thanks for posting it! |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks so much to all of you for your support! I know I had no choice, and I know I did the right thing buzzing his fur down to the skin. His hair is already growing back, and I am keeping him groomed daily, so there are absolutely no tangles or knots anywhere! I found this picture online, which is how I would like his next haircut to look (except for the ponytail on top) - unfortunately, it is kind of dark, but I will bring it with me to the groomer next time. What do you guys think? |

We'll take the #9 haircut! Wait! That was a link to the different yorkie hair-dos! Like everyone else said, it's a matter of what you like, and what you puppy will tolerate when you're grooming him. (Thanks for that link! I love seeing the different dos!) Welcome to YT! As you can see, as a group we have the same love for the breed, and we have a WIDE range of opinions! :) |
You can tell that I am a novice, referring to the topknot as a "ponytail"! But I'm learning... I already know not to walk him with a collar, but a harness instead. |
