No more Flea Collars for Lulu
 
FYI... After wearing the collar for about a week she suddenly got ill last Saturday. Noticed she didn't touch her food that night. We had been playing in the yard all day. I removed her flea collar, but still didn't have a clue what was going on. Thought maybe she got into something in the yard. She was sick all day Sunday, throwing up, diarrhea and very lethargic. I started her on some tummy medicine and she bounced out of it. I still had not put the collar back on. So she was back to herself for a couple of days and I was able to give her a bath. Because she loves being outside with us so much. The next day I put the collar back on her. Within two day's it starts again. Turning her nose up at her food, then diarrhea, throwing up and very lethargic. I am going to find out what brand this was but I know it wasn't Hartz because I read something about them and stayed clear! OMG.... If I had lost my little girl it would have been to much!!!:doghop::doghop::doghop:

I'm glad Lulu is okay. Very scary! Definitely ditch the flea collar. I've heard stories similar to your experience. We used one on our 85 pound dog years ago and I think it may have been the cause of her mouth/throat cancerous tumor. The tumor was removed and she was okay, but other people have reported the same thing.

I have heard this a lot about flea collars... I wish you'd told us you were using one :( Poor girl. I'm glad you figured out what was causing it. I definitely would not advise the use of flea collars.

So glad Lulu is ok too!!

Kristin that is horrible! OMG Do you remember when flea collars were the thing to have? Back in the day everyone’s pet had them on. I wonder what changed? Maybe now people are more into their pets and notice things more? I guess it is like the food, now it seems food is so important, but back in the day we fed our dog basically garbage and they lived to 15/16 LOL!

Yes once you get the clearance from your Vet, I would look into topical flea control. I use K9 Advantix and have never had any issues. I would def wait until Lulu is back to normal, give her little system a chance to re-coup.

I will try that... Seems animal stuff is the same as ours anymore. Nothing seems safe now days!!

So glad Lulu is ok. Thank you for posting this, new parents that are not aware will know now not to use flea collars.
When Turbo & Princess were puppies, the lady that was taking care of them @ the time put flea collars on them (even when I told her not to & provided frontline) & Turbo was trying to take it off & it got caught in his mouth. He went into toxic shock & had seizures! He was rushed to emergency care in time & recovered.

There were definitely far fewer choices for pets back in the days before Petsmart/PetCo and specialty shops. The pet aisles at major chain stores are very different too.

Pet healthcare has advanced. The pet industry has done studies showing more people consider pets family than ever before. That means more people and companies are developing better products for pets.

My vet sells the scalibor dog collar. It is a flea collar. I refused to use this or any other collar around my dogs neck. I am so glad you are not using that poison ever again.

Flea collars are toxic for small breed dogs

If you decide to go with something that's topical, I suggest you keep a close eye on her for the first couple days. Zoey gets little uncomfortable the first few days but is fine after. I think pups have different reactions to different brands.. Sort of like the heartworm meds.

I know most say home remedy doesn't work well if at all.. but depending on how bad your area is, maybe it's worth a shot? I'm currently using Advantix II but I found a tick on Magnus everyday for like 4 days, but after I did the home remedy, I haven't found one since so... wouldn't hurt to try..

I hope you find something that works well for you and your furbie. Good luck.

Thank you.... I have been checking out home remedies for several weeks now to spray on the yard. Was yours for the lawn?

No.. mine was for the pups body. I've cut back anything that would attract ticks.I live in a corner house so not much of a back yard. Besides, even if I treat mine doesn't mean others treat there's so it's just safer to spray on the pups.
