New to Yorkie Talk and New to Yorkies Hello everyone. I joined yorkie talk a few weeks back, and I have enjoyed reading the posts on the different topics. I have a toy poodle and recently acquired a yorkie. Her name is Millie, and she is doing quite well. I do have a few questions though. I was wondering if weighing 2.5 pounds at 9 weeks is normal. The mom and dad weighed 6 and 7 pounds. She does not eat much either, but not enough to make me think she is not eating enough. She seems to be growing very quickly though. She weighed 1.7 pounds at 6 weeks old. My poodle gradually grew. I know that a yorkie is different, and I am not worried about how big she will get. I would just like to have an idea. I am curious since this is my first yorkie. We have already been teaching her tricks. She can lay down, sit, comes when called, and gets in her crate when told. The potty training is going pretty well also. She is 12 weeks old today and goes back to the vet tomorrow for another checkup and vaccines. I would appreciate any advice you could give me on raising her and what to expect. Thank you! :) |
Welcome! It sounds like Millie is a normal weight. My puppy is 12 weeks and almost 4lbs because all she does is eat! She's the tiniest little thing w/a fat tummy, she's adorable. Some Yorkies are pickers and don't eat much, others like mine love to eat. I think urs is perfectly normal but if you'd like her to eat more maybe try a different food & new treats. All my Baby does is eat, play, nap, and follow me around. I cant really tell u what to expect cause this is my first Yorkie but I'm sure others will :) I'd love to see pics of her! |
Thank you for the welcome!! It is very exciting to have a yorkie. She has so much personality. |

Welcome to you both :). Idk about the size of ur pup, i've never had a yorkie pup before. My girl was already grown when I got her. I hope to someday though! |
Welcome to YT! You'll find all kinds or yorkie info here! Have fun reading and chatting with all of us! |
Welcome to you and Millie. I have a good friend named Millie, so that name holds a special place in my heart. ;) My first three are real "oinkers", but the youngest had a very slow start at not eating well or gaining weight so I gave her a teaspoon of MEG-A-CAL, which is much better than even Nutri-Cal. It sure did wonders for her. She's gained weight and now eats like a piggy! |
Thank you all for the warm welcome. Thank you for the mega-cal advice! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Congratulations on your new addition, Millie. :) My Max wasn't a big eater his first year. We ended up hand feeding almost all of his food by having him perform tricks for kibble, or by putting kibble in the Kong toy. He also enjoyed a food reward after walks or grooming. Now he is a chow hound. Wishing Millie a good 12 week checkup with the vet. |
In terms of predicting adult size, the general rule is to double the weight at 12 weeks. Many Yorkies don't follow the rule though. :) |
