Question about vitamins/supplements? Hi all, I've read numerous posts about feeding yorkies, what food is best etc, and I've noticed a lot of people talk about adding vitamins/supplements to their doggies diets. I'm just wondering which ones and what for? I'd like to get some for Sasha. Thanks in advance! |
For nutritional supplements I give Omega 3 Mini Gels for Skin & Coat & Springtime Inc. Joint Chewables for joint health.. |
If you are feeding a complete and balanced diet (i.e. kibble is balanced), and your dog is healthy, you don't really need to add any vitamins or supplements. I do give my boys fish oil and it has helped improve the dryness of their coats. They were drying out from being windblown I think. We also use a little coconut oil after brushing teeth because it is anti-bacterial. If nothing else, my boys enjoy these the fish oil and coconut oil as yummy little treats. Some will say that the added fat in their diet isn't necessary, but I take into consideration that my guys get few treats. |

Some people are use probiotics and other supplements for dogs with sensitive tummies. Or milk thistle for liver health. I wouldn't worry about any of these unless your dog has a demonstrated need. |

the 2 little ones both have luxating patella . Kaiah is grade 2 and Oscar is a very mild grade 1 . My vet said the joint supplements may help strengthen them.. Angus has arthritis in his knee that he had ACL surgery on.. The joint chews help him a lot |

Thankfully in the summer/ hot months it isn't as bad. What are you using? I have Cosequin, but always looking for something better! |

oh yeah, that is where i get mine.. before that i used Dasuquin but it was too darn expensive for 3 dogs... |
Unless you are home cooking for you dog you don't really need supplements because your dog food should be balanced unless your dog has certain problems. Like if your dog has Luxating Patella you might want to do a joint supplement. My dog has skin allergies and my vet recommended omega 3 fatty acids for her skin during the times it normally breaks out. There is no multivitamin that dogs need to take like humans can. |
Mandie has dry skin and hair so I give her a tiny bit of a mix of oils (mostly fish) - drizzle a tiny bit over her food. She loves it. I've always brushed her teeth with coconut oil - she loves it, too. Thinks it is a treat. I also rub coconut oil on her belly for dryness - it really does help. She gets carrot sticks and green beans for fiber even though her kibble is well balanced. But those are all she gets other than kibble and a few treats. No other supplements needed currently anyway. |
Ohh okay, I see. Would the omega 3 for skin and coat be ok to give her even though I feed kibble, to help her coat look healthy and grow well? |
