Jenna's dental tomorrow-ketamine and Convenia? Can anyone tell me if either ketamine or Convenia are hazardous for use in a Yorkie who has just recovered in the last month from vasculitis, please? Many thankies! |
We use ketamine to sedate kids in the ED for procedures and I am not familiar with the other med. As for the vasculitis issue, I have no clue but my inner nurse is telling me it shouldn't be an issue unless your Jenna has a drug reaction. I can't think of any reason ketamine would be contraindicated. The only issue with ketamine is that it can be a hallucinogenic and kinda freak people out. It has been used for many years, quite safely, as an animal tranqualizer. |
It isn't that ketamine is necessarily a bad choice pre gas, but my question would be why not propofol... Convenia is fine. The above is for h dogs. I don't know enough about vasculitis to answer specifically... |

Thank you. I really don't know if my vet uses propofol at all, will have to ask him. I've noticed that Jenna has returned very out of it after dentals and I'm pretty sure ketamine is what he mentioned would be used, but I'll double check. I'd read convenia has it's problems and ketamine can cause seizures so I was concerned. |
I wouldn't say Convenia is bad, but imo there are better choices. I'd only use it if pup is impossible to pill. |
I MYSELF and this my opinion only, I will not have Ketamine used on mine. I always have propofol and Iso or Sevo gas is used and I always have fluids run during the procedure. |
I don't like ketamine. It doesn't instantly reverse like propofol does. But many do use it. |

Absolutely, positively in agreement! I love propofol, as soon as the procedure is over, they stop the drip and baby wakes up very quickly....no deep sleeps for hours after the procedure, ...and I always insist on continous IVs during and after the procedure, not d/c until I pick my pup up........but I would be certain my vet was well versed on using propofol....the baby has to be monitored constantly, closely, and the dosage has to be calculated accurately....just ask MJ how it turns out if this is not done! |
I 'm sorry for not updating yesterday, I've had weeks of stressful days culminating in this one plus more doctors today and I needed to unplug so I wouldn't overtax myself. Jenna came through it all well. Propofol and ampicillin were used for anesthetic and abx. Morphine is also added during the procedure as pain relief and relaxant but only a little. She lost no teeth but had bad gingivitis and pockets that included bone loss. They used Clindoral on these areas to try to save the teeth but my vet really doesn't see her losing them. She was eager to go home and even frisky enough to bark at first but as all the drugs wore off you can tell her throat is sore. She is having trouble vocalizing and just makes these pitiful choky-sounding cries. It's better today and her breathing is good, but intubating always messes her up. This is the worst I've seen it. Taking my son in to see his gp today so if Jenna is still worrisome we'll pop by and see what can be done. We couldn't take home any of the dental aides except the toothbrush because she's allergic to everything. I'll never have them shave her again though...her footpads are completely exposed and she's down to skin all up the backs of her legs, plus her bum is so bare and shaver burned she won't sit down to eat...she seems to not even be able to bend her neck. She's only done this when her back was sprained so I hope they didn't manhandle her. Not her happiest birthday I'm sure but I think she is just glad to be home with Mum as she will not stop following me and looking like she's scared I'll desert her again. :( Do I feel like a rotter! :( |
Awww, you're a good mommy!! Praying she continues to feel better as the time passes. |
She's doing a wee bit better this evening, thank you. :) She is finally able to make a few noises without croaking. Her poor bum though. :( She is so itchy that she sat on one of our kitchen chairs and just wiggled back and forth trying to scratch it...so funny, but not funny at the same time...stubble must really be bad when it\'s on your tookus. :( I wish I\'d gotten video though. She wasn\'t scooting, just wiggling...like a bear does when it\'s backed up to a tree. When I caught her at it she just gave me one of her apologetic smiles...she curls her upper lip back and turns her face sideways, looking all guilty. lol. She\'s such a sweetie. I\'m so glad we only have to do this once a year! |
Glad she\'s doing better! |
Jess did the wiggly scoot after they shaved her bum too. It stopped pretty quick. Im glad she is doing better today! |
Why are they shaving the butt? |
