Thick whiskers A question I been meaning to ask. Sonic has some thick whiskers that get caught up when I comb his face area, I was wondering if anyone has yorky that has them also and what do you do about them? |

I trim Peek A Boo's whiskers to about 1/8 inch. |
Have the same problem with Laddy's also. |
Momo has a lot of those thick hairs, I just trim them...dogs don't need their whiskers like cats. |

Mandie's whiskers are pretty thick. I've never thought about trimming them. I know animals have certain aspects for a reason. I'm sure these whiskers came in very handy when Yorkies were originally bred for the purpose of being ratters. Very cool article, Jeanie. I just always use a wide tooth comb and pin brush on Mandie's face first and then, I use the mustache comb...I'm always gentle and try not to tug on her whiskers as I am sure that would hurt (it would hurt ME lol). I am curious though...dogs that have anxiety attacks when storms are coming - this article mentions their whiskers help them feel the vibrations of the storm coming..I wonder if trimming whiskers on those particular dogs would help them with their anxiety at all...? Something to ponder... |
That is a great article. I didn't know anything about that. |
Whiskers are supposed to be thicker...definitely. Occasionally, a loose (shedding) whisker gets caught when combing their faces with a fine tooth comb and pulls out, but normally, there is no problem. They can look a bit 'wild' but that doesn't bother me. :p They are an important item to all animals who have them. Changes in whiskers can indicate some conditions which might require attention...for example, if a kitty has broken whiskers, I take notice. |

But, you brought up an interesting point that I was thinking about...just from quite a different 'angle' however. |
My Abby has whickers like wire, mostly under her chin. My daughter trims them, she says Abby likes them trimmed because they are uncomfortable to lay on.;). I have to admit Abby not only lets her trim them but sticks her face up to let DD get at them. |
Teddy has whiskers in his mustache, under his chin and above his eyes. I trim the ones above his eyes, but leave the ones in his mustache. When I trimmed those, they seemed to grow back thicker. |
Here's another article - one of the links at the bottom of that first article. How Whiskers Help Dogs |

I hate them whiskers if dogs didn't need them I would keep them trimmed. When I comb his face area I am gentle but there is always one that gets stuck every now and then. Read the articles thanks! |
