Possible Biopsy My furbaby developed a tiny red bump on her tummy about four weeks ago. There is a slight bit of redness around the bump that comes and goes. The Vet put her on amoxi-drops for a week with no changes. She does not scratch the area, and is in no pain. Doc said it may be mammary cancer, but no mammary glands are in that area, or at least we could not see another nipple to the left of the sore. He said the thing to do if it is not gone, is to perform a biopsy. Well, in a week nothing has changed. I am thinking she got bit by a spider or bee, but it does not change in size or color. Has anyone gone through a biopsy with their Yorkie? If so, what was the rcovery time and did your baby have to wear a collar? I am quite stressed out about this, and hate to put her through a biopsy if it is not necessary. Any feedback is most welcome. Thanks Kate |
Hi Kate, I don't have a girl doggy, so I'm not as familiar with mammary cancer. How old is she, and is she spayed? I would be inclined to wait maybe another week. Not sure if that would be dangerous if it is mammary cancer. A biopsy isn't a big deal, but I understand wanting to avoid anesthesia if it isn't necessary. I would consider if she needs a dental to combine the two. |
I don't have any experience with this type of biopsy. I know when Cali had a small, painless growth on her head by her ear, my vet stuck a needle in it and did cytology on it. It turned out to be a harmless cyst. I am not sure if that would be the same type of biopsy/cytology that would be needed for Sadie. If so, it was dome while I waited for her in the vet's office with no anesthesia. It was pretty painless for her. I hope Sadie's turms out to be harmless too. |

Kate, My Uni is only 6 years old. When she was spayed, I also had my vet remove a bump on her head near her ear. They had it biopsied and it was nothing. But it has come back (tiny though). Later, I found a bump (skin colored) on her left rear foot. Had that biopsied; they said it was nothing again. But, the bump has gotten bigger, and now turned black. Also the spot where they took the biopsy with the needle looks like there is a hole in the skin. I am totally expecting the bump to turn completely black and hard and then fall off like a scab. Meantime she also has tiny tiny little bumps between her shoulder blades that look like ingrown hairs or blackheads. They never pop. Our vet said if it doesn't change in shape, then don't worry about it. The one on her foot HAS changed though. =/ ETA: If she is spayed, you don't have to really worry about mammary or cervical cancer, in addition to pyometria. |
