newbie! Hello everyone! I'm a soon to be mom of a little yorkie boy ♥ He's only two weeks old and won't be ready to come home for a while. I was just wondering what advice you can give me. I have his crate, food, bed and toys ready. I'm just unsure what grooming supplies are a must. I also am open to name suggestions. |
Hello and welcome to YT :) It's so exciting to get a pup, specially a yorkie :) For grooming supplies you will need nail clippers or nail file, comb, brush, hair dryer, towels, puppy shampoo. I may have forgotten something, other members can help to fill this in :) Don't forget pee pads :) I'm not so good with names :( (my boyfriend named our dogs lol :D ) |
"Yorkies for Dummies" and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide"....these are two great books that everyone that has a yorkie should have in their library! You can use these forever, for reference during the entire life of your baby! Name suggestions??? I LOVE "Aiden" and will be using that on a puppy myself!!!! Congratulations on getting your new baby! |

Mostly you will need lots of love and patients - as well as all that stuff the above folks listed :D I could not have made it without an x-pen and lots of blankies! |
He will be spoiled and loved. I need to order a harness and a personalized collar. Where is the best place to go? And thank yoi for all the info. |
I am not sure about a harness for his age. You might want to wait until you get him home so you can measure him. When they are super young, I know ferret harnesses have needed to be used at first. But when you are ready to invest in a good harness (I'd wait until he's grown a good amount because you will probably still have to get another one in a year..they grow a lot in the first year to year and a 1/2), go for the Buddy Belt or the Chokefree Harness. Maximo sells the Buddy Belts and Lil Sis sells the Chokefree Harnesses. You can PM either one of them with questions. :) Welcome to YT!! Such an exciting time!! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your soon to be new addition! I agree with Terri on waiting to have him home before investing in an expensive harness. You will need his exact measurements. For grooming, all I needed for the first couple of months was a little comb and some puppy shampoo. |

Hello and welcome to YT. How exciting. Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. baby wipes are wonderful item to have. |
Puppy Starter Kit Puppy food - whatever puppy is eating now Tube of Nutra Cal Blankets Potty pads Potty pad holder Iris 4 sided expen with 2 extra sides Toys Identification tags Nature’s Miracle Treats- Cheerios work well Small bowls Harness Leash Puppy shampoo Conditioner Espree Pet Facial Cleanser - plum Baby wipes Nail clippers Kwik Stop Styptic Powder Curved scissors Brush - Li'l Pals Slicker Purple and Green Brush for Kittens, Extra Small - slicker brush that I find it to work awesome... just make sure you get one without any ball on the ends of the pins so it doesn't snag the long hair. Comb - Groomaster Finishing Dog Comb - this is a great eye comb, I have it and use it to get eye boogies out and even to use around their butt when they get some dry puppy stuck! Some treats to reward for going potty in the right place. Puppy proofing: Mine shreds puppy pads or any other paper product like there is no tomorrow. I had to get a "little rascals indoor litter box" It has something to hold the pad and washable fake grass. Also, I had to put an exercise weight on the grass or she drags that out. The indoor box helps a lot since I live in a condo and it is hard to get in and out all the time due to the stairs, crappy weather, etc. (Yes, she is a feisty one.) I also recommend a play pen. That way you can set her down in a room and go do the laundry or whatever. Otherwise you don't know what he could be doing, lol. I have a medium dog play pen. She has plenty of room for blanket, food, water and her litter box and does well in there. It also has a top cover, in case my cat would wants to jump in she can't. She thinks her play pen is her den and is happy with it. Bitter apple spray, in case the little one decides something needs to be chewed on, like furniture or wooden base boards. I prefer that to soap and cayenne pepper. The apple spray is not toxic and has to be more natural than soap. Keep plenty of options for chewing that are safe-small bones, plastic toys, even a few ice cubes. The teething stage seems pretty intense. I put a large area rug from Walmart over the living room carpet as well. It can take a pee pee accident or vomit and I am a lot less upset than I would be with my good carpet. I take the carpet scrubber to it every few weeks. Vinyl floor covering and furniture coverings are helpful. Furniture legs can be covered with heavy cardboard and masking tape, then spray with bitter apple spray. It has been an adventure. Finally she is calming down after 8 months. I love my Yorkie, but I also like my home.:) |
Welcome! You will find lots of help here! These YT'ers are great! They have helped me immensely! |

hmm how about dioji (pronounced dee-oh-gee...it's a play on words for dog but i think its super cute ;)) |
A couple of thing I would love to share. I never used nutra cal with Trixie as she hated it but my vet suggested light Karo syrup which works just as well and she loved it. Something to consider. Yorkie's or some of them are tiny full grown. If you live where you have snow think about potty training to pads so our baby does not have to fight the snow or rain or any bad weather and then neither do you. Keep in mind Yorkie's can be stubborn with potty training just be persistent and gentle and he will do fine. Keep in mind there are in some states if not all that have hawks who prey on small animals be aware if you do take your puppy outside and stay close. Take this seriously please as I know someone who lost their puppy that way. Try not to leave your new baby for more than a couple hours at a time if at all possible as they need you in those first few months more than ever. Don't be surprised if your baby becomes your shadow. Mine follows me from room to room just to be sure I am ok I am sure lol. My baby has a heating pad in her bed and when I am home it is usually on low and she loves it. Make sure if ou do that that you buy one with a auto cutoff mode. Also yorkie puppies are a little fragile be careful about letting small children carry them. I had one a long time ago and let my 8 year old niece carry him. She tripped on her nightgown and dropped him and broke his leg. To say the least I learned my lesson after that and after that when I got a new baby no children held them or were left alone with them. I am not trying to startle you just sharing things I have learned thru a lifetime of Yorkie's. Enjoy your new baby and he will love you forever! |
